Panthers defensive tackle Ron Edwards will miss the rest of the season after dislocating his left elbow in Monday's 30-22 win at Philadelphia.

Edwards' injury will take a minimum of four to six weeks to heal. So the Panthers will put him on injured reserve and activate DT Frank Kearse from the practice squad, coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday.

Edwards, who signed as a free agent in 2011, missed all of last season after tearing his triceps during his first training camp practice with the Panthers.

Edwards has started every game this season, and has 14 tackles and one sack.

Sione Fua, Andre Neblett or Kearse will compete for the spot.

“It's very tough because Ron's been very stout for us at the point of attack. He's been doing a nice job, allowing those linebackers to run,” Rivera said. “So now the next guy up has to be able to do that.”

NT is a HUGE need next year as it was this year. Nothing had changed. Dwan has given us decent play, but if he has a off game, or is hurt, or simply plays a good OG, the entire DL collapses because we lose any and all interior push. Ron has been consistent when on the field, but average. He's now older, injury prone, and regressing. It's huge that we put an anchor in the middle next year so the entire front 7 doesn't rely on Dwan having a great game to free up everyone else.

    11/17/12: Lotulelei has been excellent this season. He played well against BYU, Utah State, USC, UCLA and Washington. Lotulelei is extremely disruptive and more than the numbers indicate. He has been beating blockers with strength and speed. Lotulelei has been dominant when he isn't double-teamed and has even beaten double-teams at times.

    The senior has 33 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, four sacks, three forced fumbles and three passes broken up on the season.

    8/25/12: Lotulelei was a First-Team All-Pac-12 pick in 2011 and won the Morris Trophy as the conference's top defensive lineman as voted on by the starting offensive linemen. He recorded 44 tackles, 1.5 sacks, nine tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. As a redshirt sophomore in 2010, Lotulelei was a backup for most of the season and had 21 tackles with 2.5 tackles for a loss. He is still developing and has tons of potential.

    Lotulelei was more disruptive last year than his numbers indicate. He causes a lot of havoc at the point of attack by his ability to fire through his gap and penetrate the backfield. Lotulelei is powerful and extremely quick. He has the sheer strength to grab guards and toss them aside. He also explodes off the snap to quickly gain leverage on the guard.

    The main thing that the senior has to work on is adding some more pass-rushing moves. He should add a rip move and spin move to go along with his speed and power rushes. Lotulelei is still raw. He has a huge ceiling and should only get better as he gains more experience. Lotulelei could fit in any NFL scheme, but could be a prototypical tackle for a 4-3 defense.

      Do they practice down field throws at practice?

      Yeah. I distinctly remember being apoplectic watching his first game vs Atlanta in 2023.  His lack of urgency on the drop and in general, and the lack of downfield throws were the two primary motivators for that.  I was against it but the hype on this board was so great, you couldn’t question him. Post draft, camp, preseason.    I had held my tongue until I saw him on the field in a real NFL game. Boy oh boy, total confirmation he was a huge mistake.   It hasn’t changed much. he hits a lick occasionally where he does well but it flatlines again pretty quickly. The best memory of him that I have is that TD he threw where he knew it was good and turned around and didn’t watch it get caught. That is his high point.  It was so good that a lot of people lived on it and are still living on it.

      Pass on Geno... we don't need another QB that only throws checkdowns. Jameis is the answer - the dude is capable of making throws that the best QBs can make. He just has a Madden awareness rating of 4... At least with Jameis, we can gauge how good our receivers/TEs are and know what we need in those respective parts (like is Coker a legit 3rd receiver, can XL look good with any other QB, etc.). Stidham would be another QB I'm curious about also
