Curious Scenario for the Cap Guys

that is b/c our LG, RG, and RT are weak....

It is a Cam investment b/c he work magic if he sees it coming....Gross matters b/c Cam can't see it.

Yea Cam sure worked that magic last year.

The whole blindside argument was blown out of proportion back when Walter Jones owned that position. It's only been a few years, but since then guys like Manning and Brees have set it as a standard that to be an elite QB you need to be able to feel the heat when you can't see it and step up accordingly. As of now, Cam has nowhere to step up, whether or not Gross does his job (and that isn't even a guarantee - see JPP vs Gross week 3).

cap space....much needed cap space. unless he restructures, tho, they'll probably wait until next year when they save $8mil instead of $6mil this year. this year would leave an additional $5mil in derad space as opposed to $2mil next year.

deangelo is in the same situation (we'd save $2.8mil by cutting him next year). same with beason....well, beason's dead money would still be a lot, but it goes down by quite a bit every year and next year we'd save $2.75mil by cutting him.

Finally somebody who is addressing my initial question instead of freaking out over old man Gross.

Plain and simple, how much cap space do we save by cutting Jordan Gross this year?

I would not assume that gross is definitely going to be here until after the draft. Just like suddenly we are hearing that folks would be open to trading Williams perhaps part of the plan is to see how we land in the draft before we decide to shuffle people around. If a plug and play left tackle lands in our laps, we might pull the trigger and make Gross a June 1st cut saving almost 9 million. On the other hand we might keep him to train the new kid before we let him go next year. If we go another direction Gross will be here at least for this year if not longer. Things are still up in the air and I am sure Gettleman has a plan with many contingencies.

Kalil didn't take a paycut or the high road. They just shuffled numbers.

Being a leader doesn't = taking a paycut. There are guys who have pocketed a lot of cash out there in recent times that haven't earned it much more so than Gross.

It is taking awhile b/c GM doesn't have much leverage....Gross does. They probably settle on a small restruture shuffling numbers.

No, being a leader doesn't always necessarily mean taking a paycut, however the phrase "taking one for the team" has substance in this situation. He's a leader and he needs to do what he needs to do to get this team in position to stabilize its financial situation. Otherwise, I don't consider that being much of a leader. period.

Neither does "pointing fingers" as you've said.

Also, I don't give a damn how many numbers they have to shuffle. He can make the same amount of money. The guy needs to lower his cap number ASAP or I don't believe he should stay here. No questions asked.

He's 32 years old for christ sake. Past his prime, past his pro bowl years, making pro bowl money. That's fine in many cases, but not in a case where you've got zero leverage with money. Love the guy to death for what he's done for this football team, but it's time for business.

You're making this a two way argument and it doesn't work. You're calling him a great locker room presence on one end and a politician by saying he has "pull" on the other.

You are still claiming if he is a leader then he should take a paycut...not true.

Again, if that is your belief you should be on the Jon Beason should not take a paycut but instead should play for free in 2013.

Gross isn't a politician...he just has leverage in contract negotiations. This is his JOB. Players don't "take one for the team". They get paid the most they can....then do there job.

I honestly think we could look at cutting gross still.

Depending on what happens during the draft.

If one of the three top LTs falls, I could see Jordan becoming expendable. Or atleast help our leverage in negotiations.

Don't get me wrong, I love and appreciate what Jordan Gross has done for us, but he has gotten paid well over the years and I don't think he is worth 9-10 million dollars. Maybe about half that.

Fisher or Jockel could probably step into LT and start, I'm not sure Lane Johnson could.

Johnson COULD however follow the Gross career path, Do RT as a rook then move to LT next season.

We could then Take Gross's contract, give him an affordable deal and stick him at RT for 2-3 more years.

Maybe...

This is simply the Marty Hurney aftermath. He was such an idiot, this was bound to happen. Gross; contract is not as ridiculous as is Godfrey's, Stewart's, DWilliam's, Beason's, Johnson's, or Kalil's.

Hurney would have added $5 million to the deal and extended him a year or two, guaranteeing all of it.

Gross can be cut at any time, but he has the Panthers by the short hairs right now. Gettlemen will (draft or free agency later) look to eliminate that advantage.

After~math never had a truer meaning. This was called funny math back in the day.
