Should we draft two WRs in the first two rounds?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever taken two wide receivers in the first two rounds. I can't think of any off the top of my head. Sure we could do what no one ever has, but the lack of any precedence should give some clue as to why it would be a stupid idea. If you needed two receivers you would take one this year and one next unless this draft was chocked full of great receiver prospects. Which it isn't.

We're a team with a 33 year old #1 receiver, a decent #2 option in LaFell, and exactly zero proven contributors outside of that group. Hixon has never scored more than twice in a season, Ginn is a returner, and we've got nothing else.

Atlanta spent two first round draft picks plus all of the picks from the Julio trade on wide receivers. They have one of the best passing games in the league.

If two receivers are clearly the best value on the board, I wouldn't hate it. I wouldn't go out of my way to do it, but I wouldn't hate it.

And we were a lucky lob pass and bad safety play from sweeping them this year. So let's not glorify the lucky Falcons. Soon all that lucky bullshit they get will run out.

You know. I made a comment about this but it was all in good fun. If we take a WR in both the 1st and 2nd Adams, Pilares, and any WR we picked in the past 3 years would become a waste.

I have given this a lot of thought as well. Though the school of thought that you propose is valid in its own right, the fact is that this s not Marty Hurneys roster anymore. G-man has no ties to any of these players. If he wants to cut everyone not named smitty and Lafell he can do that. Not that he will nor will we go WR 1 & 2. I'm just saying that it isn't outside of the realm of possibility for a man who preaches BPA to take two WR if they are in fact BPA. Right?

Or I could just be really tired and have been watching too many Fringe reruns on Netflix.

So, you're trying to tell me if we pick Austin in the first, and Hopkins is still there in the second that G-man passes on him? Maybe. Yeah, right!

Anything is possible. I am old enough to know that opportunism does rear its pretty head once in a blue moon, and sometimes you just gotta say fug it, roll with it, and figure out the particulars later.

Hey y'all why not just draft a receiver in every round. Forget all the other needs. Wouldn't it just be totally awesome if we could have the best wide receiver corp in the league. We could keep 9 receivers on the roster and get rid of all those running backs since we all know that this is a passing league baby............. It would be great, we could run 6 receiver sets and have guys open on every play.

Cam could do all the running since he is better than Williams and Stewart anyway. We could pick up cap space by making Williams, Tolbert and Stewart June 1 cuts and sign some pass blockers in free agency after the draft.

Brilliant, right????

Right?????

Anyone?????

Bueller??????

Didn't the cardinals do it the year they drafted boldin? they took the guy who busted in round one and boldin in round 2.

Not saying we should do it but I think it has been done before.

Now if we did it the picks would need to be something like Austin in the first(slot wr/return guy) then rogers/Hopkins/Allen/hunter in the second as an outside threat. Because at least then you are addressing two different positions.

Again not saying we should but if G decides its the best value at our picks im not going to riot or anything.

Good pick up. The difference though is that Arizona had 2 first rounders, the 17th and 18th pick so essentially they could take a flier on someone much like Minnesota could if Allen is there at 22 this year. As you note, they took Bryant Johnson, a wide receiver from Penn State at 17 and then took Calvin Pace, a DE from Wake Forest at 18. They followed that up with taking Anquan Boldin in the second round at pick 54 who was a WR from Florida State.

And honestly that is the kind of scenario where that could make sense. If we had 2 picks in the top 20 and made sure we got someone on the defensive line or offensive line we could take a receiver in the first and then come back in the second and do BPA which could be another receiver. I probably wouldn't but then again what do I know?????
