La Pantera

Step back a second--Nakamura is a solid special teamer.  He has starting free safety experience.  Maybe he was just out of position-maybe he is a natural SS?  However, this is the first I have heard of Nakamura at SS.  In an interview with Mitchell, er,he never mentions Nakamura (or Lester, for that matter). He talked as if it was between him and Campbell.

None of the local reporters have mentioned Nakamura at SS, to the best of my knowledge.

So, basically, Yas is saying that our starting DBs from last year are trading places?

I promise you that it pains me to say this, and I really, really, really hate to be that guy, but nobody outside the Panthers fan base knows who Mike Minter is. He may have very well been the heart and soul of this team at one point, but he wasn't a world beater by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah that's not true, I worked for Liberty University's football team last year, and Mike was our ST coach and to my surprise, a lot of people knew who he was.

Mike is a great guy too, he's definitely not a guy you want on your bad side and he's still very knowledgable of the Panthers and what they are doing.

Lester actually gets quite a bit of of coverage. If you watch any of the interviews on the panthers website you can here Joe Person asking about Lester every other question. In turn, I think it might have been for the article that Person put out today on Lester.

I do agree though, I haven't heard Nakamura's name mentioned once this offseason.

There's a quite a few defenses with questionable secondaries but good Pass Rush that make the playoffs often

Giants, Colts, Patriots. Hell the 49ers secondary isn't full of superstars.

I'm more concerned about or WR core.

there is a difference between not being full of super stars and not having any quality starters, don't confuse the two, our secondary isn't even average muchless good, we have 1, that's right 1 quality starter in our entire defensive backfield and with that said he's borderline average. Captain is a good nickel back but he's not starter quality CB, so we have 2 ok players in the unite and ones situational.

Nobody in CA knows who he is outside of the few Panther fans here and likely our friends who watch the games with us.

I've said it before. You're gonna pass up two top rate DT's so you can take whatever's available in the DB flavors? More pressure up front means less on the DB. I'm gonna wait and see before I jump on the 'our secondary is the worst' bandwagon. I think Lester and White may both surprise as rookies, especially Lester.

he's spot on, don't be a homer to the extent that you can't call something what it is, which is straight fuggly.

I've been talking about this going on 3 years now and you act shocked that someone says it? Lmao

I,no way shape or form see Naka starting, especially at strong safety. He's right that the area is weak. But all three guys we have contending for the SS spot are better in that position. Naka can't tackle a ball carrier OR cover a TE.

Funny thing is that if we had drafted a 2nd rounder as a safety or corner everyone would have said our secondary was going to be okay because of the upgrade yet the rookie was unlikely to be the starter just like KK is not likely the starter at DT.  Most any draft pick we obtained would not have been an upgrade this season as they matured and got experience.  We could still pick up a veteran who get cut from someone else so we are far from knowing what the final roster will be.  I prefer to wait until preseason to see who is playing well or not or how hurting we will be.  It is hard to say when it isn't even July yet.

Yeah, most secondary players struggle year one. This gives me hope that Norman will improve. Thomas improved greatly from '11-'12. I also hope to see another jump in his play as well.

notice how norman has kept his mouth shut and has been working hard.

and gettleman said norman came into the building a different person. we obviously have a lot of questions about our secondary. but i dont think they are gonna be as bad as some people think.

    • Why? AI already taking jobs, running up power bills, drinking all the water and just bad for the environment but hey lest try to shoehorn another useless way to use it.
    • I'm going rogue in R1 but there's so much confusion around us. Last year, we were going Walker or Williams and caught folks off guard with TMac. The previous year we LOVED Legette and it was no surprise when his name was called. This year, I think we nail three areas that weren't totally addressed in FA.  R1 - Kayden McDonald Full disclosure, I want Thienemann here, but think he goes before 19. Some might see an "overdraft" but McDonald unlocks so many people on our D. Having a DT the caliber of McDonald let's Lloyd, Wallace and the newly drafted Hill flood the offensive backfield. Also opens up Moehrig and our EDGES to eat. Lastly, it also removes all the pressure on DB to be the primary facilitator in the trenches and A'Shawn will be missed. I don't care about Turk. McDonald is the only true DT worth of a R1 grade and Morgan seals up our trenches here w/ a kid from a blue blood school. R2 - Anthony Hill Jr *trade up*  I love JRod, but think a smart team takes him at the end of R1 (Seattle, NE w/ two d-minded coaches). Hill, Jr is a beast and lost in the shuffle with all the Styles/Allen/Rodriguez hype. He and Lloyd with DB and McDonald up front and flanked by Scourton/Phillips is nasty.  R3 - Hecht/Lew/Center du jour Let's stop the madness with ignoring this position in the draft. We need one and should start normalizing the capital invested in our OL with someone on a draft contract. He won't need to start day 1, but I think the right selection will push for starter reps. R4 - Bud Clark Not sure if he's here in R4 where we pick, but would fit the "type" of FS/roamer that we need opposite Moehrig and Ransom. Allows us to run 3-safety looks and really keep teams guessing with personnel packages. R5 - Kendrick Law The kind of WR we need. IDK if he's any different than Horn, Jr or Metchie but Law could be a dart throw that brings a deep threat to our WR corps I'm guessing one of the R5 picks is used to move up in R2 along with a '27 day 3 pick.   Post-draft, I sign Njoku to bring in a vet at TE. I'm also keeping my eyes open for pre-week 1 team cuts for a young CB that we could bring in to maybe plan for Mike Jack's departure next year. Flame away.... I know the McDonald pick will not make people happy.
