Cams progression

Cam had improved mechanics last night, but he did not read through his progressions like I would have liked.  Now I am not going to be hypercritical by saying that he missed seeing a wide open Lafell for what may have been a couple of times because things are pretty fluid and intense around the pocket, so you are not going to see everything all the time. But, I would like to see him look to LaFell and his other options more (options other than Smith and Olsen, of course), as opposed to forcing the ball into tight coverage.

Within that same vein, I would like Shula to help Cam out by providing more two-TE sets, and more two-RB sets with one of the backs split wide as an additional passing option or extra pass protection.  Of course it's preseason, so being too cute isn't the order of the day.

Again, it's everything he has seen from the past couple of years and last night.

To me it sounded more like he was just repeating what he has read and heard. Because other than where he went with his throws, Cam looked like a real NFL QB last night. He looked like he was in full control. His mechanics looked good. All in all, Cam looked the part.

Without specific insight to what was being worked on. It is damm near impossible to critique what is going on. We only saw the outcome of the plays. We have no clue as to what areas of those plays were the focus. After all, preseason is install time. But, it is football, and that beats the poo out of the off-season.

This.

After reviewing the play last night, I assume Cam was going for the easy first down (which also indicates improvement) but he lost Bostic or underestimated Bostic's abilities as a defender. Had Cam been alittle more patient, he and LaFell would had two touchdowns together. I'm not going to dwell on it. Cam overall appeared sharp. He absolutely went through his progressions and made two great reads earlier that night.

Once again, it's preseason.

And not to belabor the point, but Cam made a good pre-snap read; Olsen had inside leverage on the defender. It was just that Cam trusted that pre-snap look too much and gave away his intentions by locking onto Olsen, thereby clueing in Bostic on his intentions. He made a good decision but followed it with a bad one, but the idea itself wasn't a bad one: Olsen had the first down otherwise.

You also have to factor in how inconsistent the offensive line has been over his career. That factors in to him being able to set his feet. Most young qbs struggle with staring down targets but Cam only did it once last night. DA was locked on Ginn all night long

Cam does need an eye coach but I wouldn't be too worried yet. It feels like he has so many critics what does he focus on? Being a leader? Foot work? Read progression? I'm sure he works on it all but it's not easy to break those habits. He will look good then get rattled and revert.

He wasn't rattle imo, he just made a mistake. It's something he obviously knows he has to work on.

I was watching the O-line last night, not so much Cam.

His INT was a horrible read, and a bad decision, IMO. These things happen.

I wish I could replay it and watch his mechanics last night, I didn't catch any backfoot action.

I definitely do not see a problem with him holding the ball too long. At all....

Hmmmmh.

Cam stood tall, and composed in the pocket (surveying the filed) as he did when he bust on the scene in 2011.

I'll chalk up the INT (in addition to what Promethian and Fieryprophet have said) to locking on to Olsen, as if he was still in practice, this being his first pre season game and all. Maybe that play, was something they been working on in practice, and Cam [after a momentary lapse] was intent on making the completion? Could have also been a timing pattern, that was disturbed.

Anyway, this is when you make those kind of mistakes. Who's to say, he wouldn't have looked for Lafell, in a real game (especially knowing now, what could happen in that scenario).

But as others have said: Cam looked tall, proud, surveying and definitive in the pocket. What more could you ask for?

It's preseason. On to the next one.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
