Appreciation for David Newton

I just wanted to mention how much better the NFCS blog at ESPN has been since they broke it up with individual writers assigned to teams.  David Newton has been a HUGE upgrade over Pat Y.  I like how he has been getting more in depth with his observations and comments, writing more about specific players and nuances of our game rather than Pat Y's usual basic "Panthers suck because they've had 3 losing seasons in a row" drivel.  The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that Pat is more often than not positive about is Cam.  Newton usually seems more unbiased (but with a positive tone) which is what I like to see.

Completely agree. He's provided excellent coverage. Reminds me of the days of Steve Reed and DGantt.

But Yas is a genius. He predicted Brandon Beane would be our GM!

If you feel like you need a good cry today, imagine what our team would currently look like if Beane HAD become our GM.  Imagine what our cap situation would be looking like, imagine who we might have taken with our first pick of the draft (Teo?).  I'm running the warm bath and sharpening my razors just thinking about it.

I like what I've read from David Newton so far. Amused at the irony of his last name too

Regarding Pat: In his Charlotte Observer days, Yasinskas was arguably the second best Panther reporter on the beat (behind Gantt) but I think having the whole NFC South to cover hurt the quality of his work. He seemed to get lazy about Panther related stuff.

The GM search really pointed that out, with his insistence that Beane was a leading candidate (turned out he was never even in consideration) and then after the hire, his telling a chat questioner that Gettleman had never done any college scouting (even a cursory reading of his bio told you that was wrong).

Between that stuff and his seeming animosity toward Steve Smith, maybe getting back on the Bucs beat - where he started - was the best thing for him.

    • That he gets worse while at the same time getting more exposure is just typical.
    • And, yes, I've been a slow boil, but watching continually watching shitty displays of football for weeks has me frustrated.
    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
