Panthers Begin Head Coach Search?

The point I make is aligned with yours--the fans and the media will remember those comments and the player will be reminded of these expectations through twitter, interviews. etc.  I understand what he means, but he needs to understand the potential consequences of his illustrations.

He called AJ Klein "Luke Kuechly 2.0" or something.  This team needs focus--not pressure and distractions.

I think if players can't handle this kind of pressure, then they'll never be able to be anything more than average.  And if we start winning, nobody will care at all about some random comparison Rivera made.

I think it's pretty obvious the leaker is the "1 candidate [that] knows"

Distinct possibility, especially given that it's counterproductive for the team to leak it.

This is always like Peyton Place with this team.

I'm probably one of the few people old enough to get that reference.

Young bucks probably think you're talking about Manning

I don't know about you guys, but in the real adult world of employment- regardless of profession- one does not hold anothers job over their head as motivation. Nor does the notion of the carrot on a stick (playoffs=job retention). If I worked for a boss who thought that was an effective form of motivation and basically told me they were beginning to look for my replacement, I'd assume my tenure was coming to an end. And even if I achieved whatever measure of success he hinted at to ensure my future, I'm not sure I'd want to continue working under those conditions.

I, for one, do not believe reaching the playoffs are necessarily a component of coaching. I think Rivera should be gone regardless, and had it not been for the time it took to bring in Gettelman, Rivera might have been replaced before this season. The GM knows who he wants to coach this team, and Gettelman is no different, except he wasn't given that opportunity this season because the FO took their time in hiring him.

Hard to say without knowing what our owner is thinking. But at this point it's looking more and more like lame duck though.

Information like this getting out so early in the season after a blowout win doesn't exactly instill confidence in Rivera.

I think the problem with things like this is that we don't how or why this information got out...or how serious it is.  It can just as easily be that Gettleman doesn't think he will need to look elsewhere and is only starting the process as a fallback option...or maybe he has already made up his mind.  But as you said, we can't really know without knowing what the owner and FO are thinking, we can only speculate.

Regardless, like CRA said, this isn't a lame duck situation like it was with Fox.  There's at least the perception that Rivera can keep his job if we get to the playoffs.  So there's still a reason for the players to stay focused and working hard, unlike with Fox when they knew he was gone no matter what.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
