Not really that surprising.

 

All are in rural eastern NC where the textile industry died.  These cities were built aroudn a couple of mills...when they shut down, there is nothing else there in the way of business.

I had to spend 3 months staying in Lumberton (worked on the sale side due diligence to sell a plant we had in St Pauls NC). 

 

Worst three months of my life......that place is a shithole.

Most of eastern NC about 30-50 miles from the coast is broke as a joke. 

 

However, there are also many many wealthy farming families sprinkled in there as well that you wouldn't know had a dime.

i've never been to lumberton but gallup NM is downright depressing. it's hard to imagine any place being worse

They name cities because it's difficult to name regions.  You could claim that near every area between 30-50 miles east of I95 and 30 miles west of the coast is nothing more than an economic poo hole.

Two guys I lived with at ECU were from Lumberton. I still talk to them and one of them usually comes up to visit 1-2 a year. They both described Lumberton to me as a prison race war. It's a poor city and a lot of people don't have much. It's blacks/hispanics/whites/indians that don't get along with each other.  The "Lumbee" Indians absolutely hate blacks there, which is shocking because a lot of them are mixed with african americans. This is what my friend told me. 

 

 

I think Lumberton is where Jordan's dad was murdered.

I'm honestly surprised I didn't see any Ohio towns in the top 10. Canton is awful. Barberton is worse.

yup - Lumberton is a good example of this. Top heavy with money. Certain families have a lot and most everyone else is below middle class.

 

Greenville NC is a shithole, too. The college has been there for over 100 years, which obviously helps the economy, but it's a school that is surrounded by people (mostly poor people) that don't attend the school, this includes the people living in the housing projects around the county and also kids who just refuse to grow up and live there so they can party 24/7.  Students get assaulted walking back from the bars every weekend. I haven't been back there in a few years so maybe it's improved but I doubt it. 

 

I got into an argument w/ a poster on here a few months ago who said he lived in Greenville and it wasn't ghetto/trashy/dangerous. I laughed at him because I immediately recognized that this dude was more than likely one of the problems in G-Vegas. If you aren't going to school there and/or don't have a good job there (like working at the hospital) you have absolutely no business living there.

Not surpising to me at all.  Forest City is west of Charlotte. Nice area geographically, but heavily dependent on textile and furniture mills, all gone now of course.

Used to have family in Lumberton we visited for Christmas...never wanted to stay in that place long at all.

 

Outside of the coastal towns, all of Eastern NC is pretty bad.

I've spent some time in Lumberton for work.  Absolute shthole.
