Bill Barnwell on the Panthers[and Cam]

Gucci Mane

One thing to note is as far as personel wise, this is the same team that went 2-14 in 2010. Yeah, we added tolbert, Olsen and Ginn but just think about that for a second. Cam is definitely far from flawless but he can improve. The face is, he has been playing good enough to win games. Now people are calling for benching him in favor of anderson. You put him in and watch the offense get worse. We need to get this kid some help on offense and someone able to use his strengths as a OC. Watching games sometimes, it makes you wonder does this team ever adjust? It is like they are running a script at times. Maybe it is just me regarding that aspect.

That being said, I am going to cheer for everyone on this team, even the coaches in hoping that we can right this ship. Hey, it can happen. we are 1-3. We started 0-2 when we went to the NFC championship game against Seattle. I still believe we can turn this around but everyone has to do their part in making this happen.

While I agree that Cam is not the biggest problem this year, Barnwell does make some questionable comments.  Greg Olsen with one less game than most players still ranks 50th among all receivers and based on yards per game is actually above Tony Gonzales who everyone thinks it tearing up the league.  His yards per catch is also above Gonzales at this point.  He does trail 1 TD to 3 TDs but he also has 12 fewer catches. So I would not discount him at all.  Also Ted Ginn is actually doing very well this year as a number 3 wide receiver and while he may not have started on many teams in the NFL, there aren't that many quarterbacks with Newton's arm who aren't afraid to throw it deep and not worry about Ginn over running it and risking an INT.  I think by year end he will prove to be a very legitimate receiver who has earned a job s a receiver as well as a return man.

The other thing is that the read option is not that widely used  this year by any team.  San Francisco has significantly dialed it back and Washington doesn't use it much at all. It seems that most teams who value their quarterback don't want them taking so many hits which is the primarily reason that Rivera and Gettleman have dialed it back here.  It wasn't whether it could be effective simply that it exposes your quarterback to extra hits.  In all fairness thought, Newton seems to be one of the best at getting down and avoiding the big hit.

I don't disagree that Cam gets too much criticism or that the coaching has surely left something to be desired, I am just not convinced that all of his points are valid.

Completely agree that our WRs are garbage. I am done with Lafell.

As I was watching the Bears/Giants game last night, I couldnt help but see the similarities in our current offense and the Bears previous offense. In the past, I remember that Cutler held the ball too long, the o-line was awful, and Cutler got pressured or sacked every other play. This season is a completely different story for them with Cutler taking a lot of 3-step drops, there always being a check-down or quick option, and Cutler having a quick delivery. It seems that this is largely a result of a coaching staff that knows what they are doing. I just hope that Gettleman can replace these clowns before they do irreversable damage to our potentially elite QB's psyche.

Good article, as usual from them.

Cam makes some bad choices, but that is going to happen.  When he makes GOOD choices, his team isn't there to help him out, because we haven't put talent around him.  He's almost in a lose-lose situation.    Basically, young QBs WILL make mistakes, but if you don't have the help around him to capitalize on playing the right way, he's just screwed.   That goes for the coaching he has to.

We haven't drafted a WR that is a #1 OR #2 quality in this league in over 10 years, that is a big problem.   Cam has an uphill battle, between the critics since day one, the lack of talent around him, and also the cap situation with the team.

Or before Cam walks and some other team gets blessed with his talents.

The 2nd pick Newton threw

Madhatter kept saying it came from not seeing the field and anticipating the LB whereabouts

But... we forgot that was basically the same play the LB let Smith cut across and woulda had the TD pass if he didn't drop it. So the LB made a great read knowing they was going to go for that same play... like I said Smith was the only receiver on that side. That was just a bad play call

Cam also said when he saw Smith didn't have the right leverage he was just trying to put it out of the way of Peterson. Slants are tricky because it's suppose to be 3 step and release when the slant is covered and the blitz is coming the only option is a sack.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
