Game Grades - Panthers at Vikings

The Carolina Panthers put together a complete game for the second time this season. At 2-3 their playoff hopes are on life support, but alive none the less.

On with the grades....

Offense:

Cam Newton threw for 242 yards, had 3 touchdowns, 0 turnovers, and 1 disappointed granny. That is a complete performance. Even against one the of the league's worst defenses the performance was good enough to warrant praise for Cam Newton. Cam is a franchise quarterback, provided adequate protection and coaching. Deangelo Williams averages 3.8 yards per carry and "Donald" Lafell had a break out game for over 100 yards and a TD. Overall is was a well rounded day of production for the offense.

Offensive Grade: A

Defense:

The first string defense allowed 3 points to the home team. I don't care what offense is on the field, that is outstanding. Throw in the fact that they allowed Adrian Peterson only 31 yards on the ground and the point is driven home that Carolina has a top tier defense. Thomas Davis has apparently decided to be Kevin Greene for Halloween, landing a pair of sacks. Mitchell and Mikell may be the best safety tandem the Panthers have ever had. The Vikings did score against the Panthers second string defense, but I am not factoring that in this grade.

Defensive Grade: A

Special Teams:

It is often overlooked that Gano is routinely putting kickoffs in the back of or even out of the endzone. This is huge for the Panthers. Historically they have been known for giving up a big return here and there. That won't be happening as long as Gano continues to perform.

Special Teams Grade: A

Coaching:

I don't think there is anyone more critical of the coaching staff than I am. However, the Panthers put together an excellent game plan and executed. The level of aggressiveness on offense equaled that of the defense. When that happens, the Panthers win. We can only hope that Rivera and Shula have learned this lesson and will not let us down again next week.

Coaching Grade: A

The Panthers have a chance to be at .500 next week with a win against the Rams. That is an extremely attainable goal. In 6 days we will find out if this team has a renewed focus or are just toying with our emotions yet again.

Harris and Minter never shared the field, but Minter and Deon Grant were a solid tandem in 03 as were Minter and McCree in 05. However, Mitchell has a level of athleticism that Carolina has rarely had at safety, and if he truly has the instincts and ability at FS that he's shown these past 3 games then he could become one of the top safeties in Carolina history.

    • This play was never designed to go to either DJ or Odunze. The primary read is Burden who is stymied early, with the outlet being Kmet if Caleb doesn't like the option for Burden. Given the situation it's pretty obvious the simple play is to take the free yards with Kmet, or if you want to be aggressive just wait a beat longer for Burden to uncover on his double move. If Moore was ever going to be a viable target in this play then Caleb should have started out reading Odunze to hold the safety in the middle and then coming to Moore, but because he started the snap staring down the right and then came back to the middle late it made it where the safety's leverage remained to the outside of Moore, so he would never have imagined that pass actually being thrown to him in that situation. Realistically DJ's best option in that context is to just occupy the safety to leave a hole open for Caleb to get it to Burden, which is probably why he throttles down vs carrying the safety across.
    • Even with Sonny Styles still on the board I thought it's a no brainer to address the Oline after Icky's injury.  And how can you pass up Fano at 19 given our situation. Then the rest of the draft just kind of made sense with maybe the exception of Klubnik.  But if Canales can fix him and Young goes down. . .I think it's a solid pick. What do you think of this draft?
    • When we didn't trade him to the Rams or the Bears (I believe the Bears said they would take one of Brown/ Burns/DJ Moore) we should have just signed him and kept him.  We should have traded him to the Rams obviously and we should have kept DJ and traded Burns.  We made all three wrong choices with Burns lol.
