JR, Gettleman and Cam

Alot of huddlers last week brought up the comments Gettleman made about pocket QBs being the best type of QB to win a superbowl. Many hinted that he'll let Cam walk or trade him before he resigns him.  

 

I don't think there is a chance in Hell Cam goes anywhere.  While Gettleman may be in charge I seriously doubt that Jerry would ever sign off on letting Cam go anywhere.

 

We all remember before the Draft Cam sat down with JR for quite some time.  You could call it an interview but I think it was just JR seeing what he was getting into.  Once he signed off on Cam unless Cam fails miserably I just don't see this ever happening.  

 

As much as it pains me,  Luck is not facing the sophomore slump and is pretty much all who we thought he was.  He's a gamer.

 

But, so is Cam.  Many talk about Cam not going through his progressions but on Lafell's TD, Lafell was the 3rd option so though it is only one instant, Cam is improving.

 

Cam's a Panther for life, we won't trade him, we won't let him walk and the sooner the fair weather fans get that through their thick skulls the better.

The sooner we put some real weapons around Cam the better and we will see just how good he can really be. Quite frankly Cam has played pretty damn well considering the circumstances. For the most part he still has Hurney's guys around him and is still in the developmental stage of his career. Though we are still at an early stage in the season and in the playoff hunt at the moment, I cannot help but get excited about this off-season though it is a bit premature.

 

Really hoping we go heavy on the offensive side of he ball in this year's draft and get him the protection and weapons he needs to truly succeed. Every other young quarterback has been surrounded by weapons to make their transition to the NFL easier. We haven't. Thankfully our defense is shaping up to be very good for a long time but we need a highly touted left tackle going forward, a good right tackle, a solid right guard, and more receiving threats for Cam. Hoping we address the tackle or receiving positions in the first and seconds rounds and continue to add depth throughout the remainder of the draft. Mike Evans or Sammy Watkins paired with Cam and a solid offensive line in front of him sounds so enticing.

While it was completely fuging awesome, Cam's amazing rookie season was probably one of the worst things that could happen for a lot of the fans--and perhaps even Cam himself to a certain extent.  It made expectations extremely high and us forget just how raw he was when we drafted him.  And, while I love him to death and hate to say it... I think he bought into his own hype a bit after his rookie season (seriously, go watch some of his interviews from back then particularly the "safari" one and the Madden videos, etc.).  I mean I don't blame him a bit, he was a young kid on top of the world at the time coming off back-to-back National Championships, two undefeated seasons, a Heisman, a historical rookie campaign, the Pro Bowl, and endorsements out the wazoo.  All of it was pretty unprecedented.  He's definitely grown a lot since then.

 

It was generally accepted among the fanbase that he was going to be a project QB with ridiculous upside and potential for the future before we drafted him, and no one really expected him to do much his first year.  Yet there he goes guns-a-blazing from the get go and completely shattered all expectations of him going forward.  Now we're spoiled and expect him to be elite 5 games into his 3rd year.

 

The dude only had 1-year of D1 school experience, he pretty much jumped straight into the pros.  It's amazing what he's accomplished thus far, and he's still learning as opposed to other QBs who are more experienced and polished with their footwork, etc coming out.

 

Hell even still he's the best young QB in the game if you ask me.  He also is very serious about getting better, you can tell he legitimately wants to be one of the best and completely despises losing.

I agree.  While he needs to learn to be a good pocket QB you cannot take away the natural talent to run.  There are very few QBs in this league (if any) that can run the way he does and with power to boot.  He smartly slides when necessary but can lower the shoulder and get physical when needed.

 

Even the designed runs help him.  I have noticed when he pops off a run or two.  He settles down.   

 

Its a gamble that he might get hurt but a pocket QB takes a gamble on being blind sided.   

 

I just hope Gettleman isn't trying to turn Cam into something he may never be.

The balance of plays on Sunday (run vs pass vs runs by Cam) was darn near perfect on Sunday.

That is the mix that develops Cam as a pocket passer, but also allows him to make plays with his athletic ability.

I agree 100% that Luck is a bright young QB with a great future.

But using the "Cam Newton" standard for sophomore slumps established by the experts last year, Luck is WITHOUT A DOUBT experiencing a sophomore slump.

The ONLY standard Luck is better than Cam on is TEAM wins.

The Colts have won aided by Luck's QB play.

The Panthers over the last 2+ years have, in general, lost DESPITE Cam's QB play.

Unless one is bringing previously held prejudices to their view of the situations, its plain to see.

No they aren't. Olsen maybe.

Williams isn't above average. Smith isn't either anymore....not based on the role they are playing here.

      Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.

      No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.

      Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
