Peter Schrager Goes Off On Carolina Critics

I got in a heated argument with a friend this week — about the Carolina Panthers.

This friend is not a fan of any NFC South team, isn’t passionate about the league’s scheduling intricacies and isn’t someone who criticized Cam Newton for having a “fake smile” before the 2011 NFL Draft. He’s got no real dog in the fight.

But he said something that really bothered me this week. He said the same thing I’m hearing a lot of places that just drives me up a wall.

“The Panthers haven’t beaten anyone.”

Oh, I hate that. HATE. I don’t hate many things. Seriously. I don’t hate traffic. I don’t hate rainy days without the umbrella. And I don’t hate when my friends talk about “Game of Thrones” — a show I’ve never seen — all the freaking time. But I hate the “Panthers haven’t played anybody” thing.

Everyone keeps saying it.  I'm kind of used to it by now.  Thing is, a lot of teams *cough*saints*cough* have played really crappy teams.

Schrager is obviously the best, most knowledgeable sportswriter around. 

 

Speaking of which, where's Adam Schien been lately?

There really isn't that many teams  that are known to be great. We thought we played one with the Giants but they flopped. Some people thought the Bucs would be good, again a flop. How many good teams are on the average NFL schedule? 3? 4? 5 tops? Most teams have only played one or two great teams.

He should write more fluff articles in the off season.. they seem a little out of place during the regular season..

We have played the teams on our schedule. If you don't like it, take it up with the commish.

I don't think people are saying the Panthers suck because of the teams they have played they are saying that it's unknown how good the team is. It's a fair thing to say at this point.

Can lose to any team at any point. Except maybe the Jags. But, it's tough to tell how good we truly are because the only real team weve played with a good record at the moment is Seattle. While that was a close and winnable game - Seattle isn't really a powerhouse offense like the Broncos. And we were better equipped to stop them - given we have a great front 7. We made them one dimensional taking away Lynch.

I do think we are capable of beating a lot of teams with the talent we have and our stout defense. Going to be very interesting stretch of games coming up.

If we haven't played anyone, then that must mean the Chiefs aren't very good either, because they haven't played anyone either.
