Gettleman switches scouting services

“Their philosophy was the way I was raised,” Gettleman said Monday. “Height, weight, speed are important, but not the end-all, be-all. It truly was about evaluating the guy as a potential prospect and player.”

BLESTO was founded in the 1960s and is an acronym for “Bears, Lions, Eagles and Steelers Talent Organization.” The Bears and Eagles have since left BLESTO, which now is comprised of eight teams: Carolina, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Washington, Detroit, Minnesota and the New York Giants.

This isn't all that surprising. Gettleman has worked within and with BLESTO for pretty much his entire career. It's his comfort zone.

Dumb question perhaps but why can't you be part of both?

BLESTO is what the Giants use. I think Gettleman worked for them at one point.

Doesn't necessarily mean we fired any scouts or anything. May not be huge, but could conceivably signal to those who were hoping for other changes that they may see some.

Yeah, but all those teams save Jacksonville have pretty decent talent. Coaching not so much. The scouting conglomerates aren't everything though, it's just a resource. Teams employ their own scouting team groups and do their own independent analysis. The National and BLESTO are basically just huge databases of scouting analysis that's shared with the group teams.

I definitely like the sound of the BLESTO philosophy better (i.e. performance over measurables).

Gettleman was a scout for years.  I trust that he knows what he's doing in that department.  I wouldn't worry so much about the other teams using this firm.  You can give decision makers the best information in the world, but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans if they don't listen to it.

This can be nothing but good news as far as im concerned. We may now see some of those late round gems fall our way. Dare i say maybe a second round-third round pick pan out?
