Report: Eugene Monroe option for Panthers

You have to consider how much Gross was going to cost on a 1-2 year deal before he retired. He said at his press conference the team wanted him back and while he might have given us a hometown discount, Gross being re-signed wouldn't have come cheap either.

So you can assume Gettleman already planned to sink a good chunk of change into the LT position by re-signing Gross for the short-term. Is it really that much of a stretch to say he'd spend a little more to secure a top talent at the position for the long-term?

The team can if they do some cap trickery. Give him a signing bonus, make the first season's base pay the minimum. Then include an option bonus in year 2 and 3 with a 30% increase in the salary in those two seasons. Bam, big deal for a big time LT that would only cost the team 3-4 million in Season 1.

Would take a LOT of salary cap moves to sign him and still have room to bring back guys like Ginn, Mitchell, Munnerlyn and sign their draft picks.  I just don't see it happening...they could draft a player to develop and sign a cheaper vet to fill the spot in the mean time while still improving the rest of the roster.

There not going to be able to bring back Ginn, Mitchell and Munnerlyn even if they don't make this move. They need a solid LT no matter what though and that trumps bringing those guys back. A mid level guy is going to cost the same in year 1 compared to a solid-good LT if you do the contract right and feature bonus money. Only difference is the rest of the years on the contract.

As for the moves, restructure Johnson, cut Godfrey and you have 10-11 million in space right there which gives the Panthers a total of 16 million to make moves and sign draft picks.

Gross cap was $4mil probably the same amount you could pay Anthony Collins, just don't see how we pay Monroe,Veldheer or Albert, Miami and Arizona better caps will offer more money than we have.

Gano got almost $4 million per year. You can bet Gross would have gotten more than that, even on a 1-year deal.

    • Anybody got a clue what this is supposed to mean? 🤔
    • I figured as much. Hopefully he's just resting up and will be ready for round 3 (if we make it that far.)  Sucks to see. Hes been our best defender (besides Slavin) in the playoffs so far.
    • I've never bought into the idea. There's just too much at stake, even for front office people. Jobs are lost, trust is lessened, lives are altered, reputations are damaged and more. Throw in that the average front office person isn't as young as the average player. They may not have ten years ahead of them to salvage their careers. Any given year could be their last. The only person not guaranteed to suffer some direct form of consequence from losing is the owner, and even there you still have problems (fan reaction, team reputation, revenue, etc). You've also got massive egos in play on that front so it can get personal. Mind you, I do accept that there are "fire sales" in order to build for the future, but even those have consequences. They don't exactly guarantee success either. Poorly run teams often just wind up in the same circumstance a few years down the road. Sorry gus, but my tinfoil hat just hasn't fit me for quite a while.
