Quick Question....

We haven't done anything this offseason to build any kind of young core. We've only lost guys. There have been no additions yet. Don't try and make out financial and grudge moves to be anything but that.

You don't build a young core by handing out huge contracts on the first day of free agency every year, you do it by drafting well and using affordable mid-level free agents to fill in holes around those core guys. Obviously this depends entirely on drafting well.

I agree that Gettleman has handled the Smitty situation somewhat poorly, but to pretend that Smith was still a true core player is simply looking at him with rose-tinted glasses because he just isn't that anymore despite being paid like he still is.

It's painful for fans, but in the long run it is a good business decision.

I loved Mitchell here and he was a great leader for that secondary. BUT he is definitely not worth $5M/year for us to have kept him. Godfrey can fill in and do just as good as he did behind our front 7, provided he's healthy.

Yea I loved Mitchell, but not $25 million over 5 years worth. With our cap situation not even close to that much.

That could be a possibility, but I think it's highly unlikely. Name a logical reason that Cam would be distracted by Smitty? And please try to provide some evidence of Cam saying something along those lines.

Because Cam is going to use the media to slam 89?     No.    Whatever issues Cam had,  he would have probably went to the guys in charge.. not the media..       If he had issues that is.    So no,  there wouldn't be any evidence.

Hence the rumor..

Sources tell the Charlotte Observer that Panthers GM Dave Gettleman views Steve Smith as a "distraction," and wants to turn the locker room over to Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly.

Smith's agent has declared his Panthers career through, and it sounds like the feeling is very much mutual. Smith's excellent career has been fueled by one mighty chip on his shoulder, but that can be an exhausting personality trait for teammates and coaches. Some fresh air might do Smith well as he rides off into the sunset of his career.

I think some may be confusing 'core' with 'Franchise' type players. I see 'core' as being players you can build around. 'Franchise' players are those that the general public associate with a given team. I definitely think there is a difference, but that's up for debate.

With that being said...Cam and Luke are our 'core'. Star also, but not quite as key as qb and mob. Smitty and Gross were 'franchise' players.

Obviously not but everything he says about Smitty is about how close they are and how good Smitty's been to them. Notice "Gettleman believes Smith is a distraction." Never says he's a distraction particularly TO Cam, and never says Cam believes he's a distraction. So yeah evidence that was a stupid request, but how about a logical reason that Cam would view Smith as a distraction?

In the long run, maybe. Long run is always only a maybe at best. Todays "young core" is tomorrows DeAngelo and Stewart In the short run, we are missing the playoffs next year. You can't change half your starters and lose 2 team captains and expect similar output.

The simple fact is we can't afford to be in win now mode, even if DG wanted it. The reason why is because we overspent on players in the past, which is the whole point I'm trying to make.

Cam, Kalil, Olsen and our defensive front 7 are our studs that we're moving forward with.

The WR corps was bad, OLine was a mess, secondary was carried by the front 7.

They're overhauling the weak parts of the team while keeping the strengths intact. Everything that's happened so far I've expected for weeks now.

LOL. You really don't know what a core player is, do you? Core player indicates someone who will be around for the long haul and play at a high level, excluding QB's in some cases. Gross & Smith haven't been true 'core' players since 2010.

Our only true core players:

Cam

Luke

Star

Hardy

Part that sucks about this is only having 1 offensive guy........ Need HELP bad...

Cam might not view him as a distraction, but the coaches & FO might.

Steve Smith, Jordan Gross, Mike Mitchell, probably Captain Munnerlyn, probably Ted Ginn

Add in that Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly have most likely lost all interest in spending their careers here. So theres that.

I doubt that seeing as how the panthers are freeing up poo tons to give them the 2 largest contracts in panthers history
