Panthers "lurking" on James Jones

The Panthers are "keeping tabs" on free agent James Jones.

They're also "slow-playing" Hakeem Nicks' market. GM Dave Gettleman took a similar philosophy into 2013 free agency and emerged with several big-time contributors, including Mike Mitchell, Ted Ginn, Drayton Florence, and Travelle Wharton. After releasing Steve Smith, Carolina needs two starting receivers.

From the looks/sound of it Gettleman is a my way or the highway kind of guy but we should be kicking the door down for Nicks not slow playing it....

Especially considering the Colts can and likely will(at the very least it's a legit  concern) steal him from us if we don't act...

Nicks - Sanders - rookie - McNutt - King

Olsen - Williams - other TE who's name escapes me

Penn - Silatolu - Kalil - Chandler - Bell/rookie

My hopes.

Not bad at all but I thought I heard Sanders to the Bucs (or at least he was visiting them...)

YES the Bucs...AGAIN....:(

The reason Sanders > Jones IMO would be that he is 26 so he is younger and has the same production as Jones with a much worse offense in Pitt.....

Lurking = considering offering him table scraps while another team acts like they actually want him, I'm guessing. Weird how these players keep going to teams that value them...

it's not like Gettleman's approach has worked in the past or anything

    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space.
    • And they are perfect during the month of February! The fact they're 11th in the league now, but best in the league since Dec 6 tells you everything you need to know.
