Better Know a Prospect - Jared Abbrederis

The Panthers will almost certainly be looking for a wide receiver in the later rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft.

I hope they take a good long look at Jared Abbrederis out of Wisconsin. If he had to be compared to an NFL wide out, it would be none other than Panthers WR coach Ricky Proehl.

Like Proehl, Abbrederis doesn't have elite size or speed. This is why he is projected as a late 4th round prospect (Proehl was drafted in the third round). He measure in at 6'1 and 195lbs, just like Ricky.

But also  like Proehl, Abbrederis brings all the intangibles to the table.

First of all, Abbrederis went from being a walk on to a number 1 receiver. Think about that. Walking onto a major football program and developing into a number 1 receiver while catching balls from guys like Russel Wilson. He leaves the Badgers as one of the most productive receivers in school history. That, my friends, is impressive.

He didn't do it by running faster than the other guys, but by running smarter. Abbrederis may be the smoothest route runner in the draft. His hands and field awareness are also second to none. Scouts use words like coachable and savvy when describing him.

The best shot this kid has in making an impact in the NFL is with the mentoring of Ricky Proehl. Lets hope he gets that chance.

I really like Abbrederis. He was always terrifying corners and making them look silly with nothing more than good old-fashioned route running. And his physical skills are underrated, he's got a lot of quickness even if he doesn't burn you. Made a ton of tough catches too.

theres only 1 receiver they better be looking at in the late rounds

Brandon Colemon

Having watched some Bridgewater highlights, I would add Devante Parker to that list.  I heard he was returning to school, then Strong leaves, and recently I saw his name in mock drafts.  I am guessing that he is in the draft.

Parker (#9) seems to make all the catches.

Abbrederis, however, is a great possession WR who would benefit from Proehl's coaching.  He could be a very solid player.

If we pick a tackle and receiver in round 1 and 2 I wouldn't be mad if we took him in round 3. He is underrated and his speed and athleticism is too.

Scouts get blinded by color when judging the legitimacy of a prospect.

We picked Cam and we got Luke because of this silly biased approach to the legitimacy of a prospect.

I think Jared is underrated because of the same biased scouting approach. I think he will be a very high end 2 when it is all said and done. That is definitely worth a 3rd round pick.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
