Dane Brugler from The Athletic 2-round cock draft
MHS831 replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I have considered free agency. LT? Either not good enough or too expensive. Besides, this is a good OT draft. (I would rather have a free agent, mind you, but the Panthers' reality suggests we can't do it without neglecting other positions). What LTs are available in free agency, and what do you expect to pay? Any Ickey-level OT is going to cost over $20m. How much do we already have invested in our OL? I get your point, but I do not think you can spend over $100m per on your OL. We have 2 guards and a center who pull in about $75m per season. We don't have a center yet. Teams just don't let good LTs hit free agency, and when one does on rare occasion, he is expensive. If you want a third of the Panther cap going to 5 Offensive Linemen, free agency is the way to go. We still need S, ILB, Edge, WR, etc. I think we'd need more than Nijman--and I would understand if we went free agent for a T--but that is putting a TON of your cap at OL--so considering our situation, I do not see that option as preferable. You may disagree. If I was not talking LT on our line and thinking about the cap, I would agree 100%. -
Will be interesting to see how they come out tonight. The Boston game seemed to open the flood gates of media attention. And it’s not just that they’re playing well, in some instances they are getting compared with all time greats. This is still a young team, and it would be easy for an immature team to lose some focus, buy into their own hype, and think they can coast bit. The Heat are a middle of the road team without their leading scorer. There is no big dragon to slay, no big statement to make. I think we’ll learn a lot tonight: are they young but mature, or do they still have a ways to go mentally?

Panthers North for the win. Good luck to him. Great guy, hated to see him leave here, but he's about to work with the best QB he's ever worked with (at least on a regular basis).

Thanks for the info!

good post. this is the season when I get stressed over the cap and then remember, it is not my problem. -
At this point, I think we need to be looking beyond backups. Bryce hasn't even proven he's worthy of being a weekly starter. It's time to start looking for another potential QB1. Bryce needs to be pushed. The Panthers need to explore future possibilities who could potentially take the reigns when/if Bryce has another meh season. Geno doesn't fall into that category anymore.

Kind of surprised the Raiders are releasing Geno. I'm guessing they are going to throw Mendoza out there week 1 and probably end up killing his career by the start of 2027...
-
The problem is he's not much better than Andy at this point in his career.
-
Moore should immediately be the best receiver on the Bills.
-
I like the market, but I think we could do better than Edmunds. Being a in Chicago, I've seen it up close. He's a solid linebacker, but has had injuries and a lot of wtf lapses. He's the classic overpaid solid starter that at one point was hyped as a top guy. The defense actually played a bit better when he was out this past year. Wouldn't hate it but don't necessarily want it.

Raiders looking to release Geno Smith? Not looking to replace Bryce, but we could use a decent backup vs Andy's recent performances. (Not saying Geno would take a backup role, just thinking out loud) https://bsky.app/profile/rapsheet.bsky.social/post/3mgfp5mdits2e

I wonder with this winning culture, would the Charlotte Hornets finally be an attractive landing spot for free agents?
-
Division or conference?
-
Tonight’s opponent, the Miami Heat, will be without their leading scorer Norman Powell (22.5 ppg). Miami is currently sitting at the the 8 seed and the Hornets are 2 games behind in the play-in 9th seed. Great opportunity to cut that lead down to 1 game tonight at home.

I honestly like just letting these guys grow. They're all super young outside miles. You have two first round picks this year plus saliun. I think the goal would be that's your replacement for miles

Lloyd is who I want, but I think Edmonds is absolutely in his tier and gives us a pivot if either guy tries to strong arm us with contracts. TBF, both could, but at least we have a second option of equal value. Give me either player here and I think we find our alpha, green dot LB. Draft another in rounds 1-3 too. Devin Lloyd (28 in September) 4 year totals: 63 games - 436 tackles, 15 TFL, 18 QB hits, 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 9 INT, 1 pro bowl Tremaine Edmonds (28 in May) 4 year totals: 58 games - 437 tackles, 17 TFL, 9 QB hits, 3 sacks, 2 FF, 10 INT, 2 pro bowls

I was going to make the same comment--better in coverage, only 27. Jags LB is going to be overpriced.

Great point.

There are a couple of options. One is just to not accept your commission and just pay back the Academy for your education. Alot of money for normal folk, but if you're drafted high enough it's a drop in the bucket. You'll need a waiver not to go in enlisted, but normally drafted players get waivers to join the reserves instead of active duty military. Showing that you can actually go to the NFL from a military academy is much better for recruitment than having one more officer on a ship/sub/aircraft. Things were different in the Staubach and David Robinson days. I remember Mike Wahle just paying back the Academy after getting kicked out for steroids after his junior year. Not a big deal when you're drafted in the 2nd round.

have 10 dollars riding on the hornets to win the division to pay out 1200, my buddy has multiple bets but one would pay out close to 15k

Whoever you get has to be able to shoot a 3 for spacing purposes, especially if you want to replace Miles at 4 with Moose and run a different center. I like the Miles for Giannis trade idea but where do you put him? At center? Can you imagine a double screen and roll/slip with with Lamelo, Giannis and Kon... If you do that trade you need another free agent / draft pick to play at 4 that can stretch the floor otherwise I don't think it works.

I like it. I really like getting smart players and for such a hybrid type it's going to take one of those. You don't get into Annapolis on a pure athletics scholarship ever. The year you go in you are one of only 100 candidates (or thereabouts) with massive factors of scholarship, community service, character and commitment. Pair that with the tape and youch. Might need to swing earlier than later. One question, though, what about his military service requirements? Staubach had to wait out his required active service time, others have been given recruitment type positions in the off season. Not to mention that as an officer (as all Academy grads will become) he could be called to active duty at any time, especially with our current president's proclivity for sending in the Navy.
