NORTH CAROLINA: Open since 1951, Duke’s Grill in Monroe serves a mean Carolina Burger, a patty with chili con carne, coleslaw, mustard, and chopped onions. The joint requires all customers to turn off their cellphones upon entering, and has been visited by the Food Network and Travel Channel.

Never been to Duke's. Might have to check it out. Haven't been to any on the list actually.

Stopped reading at California. Admits In-N-Out is overrated, which it is, but in the most populous state in the country he chose to review a chain burger joint while the other states are all independent restaurants.

Are you telling me you couldn't find a hole-in-the-wall burger joint in California? Really? I could name you half a dozen and I'm relying on my brother and sister who still live there.

I used to eat at Dukes a lot when I was in HS because my parents weren't terribly far from Monroe. I haven't been back in years though.

I can confirm, their burgers are amazing if you like Carolina style burgers.

The chili is what really makes the burger though. I could drink a big cup full of their burger chili.

If you don't like chili on a burger, their burgers are pretty ho-hum IMO. Not worth going if you're not going to put chili on it.

Penguin Drive in had a pretty good burger, also Zacks  on south blvd had a decent one. Never made it out to Dukes, may have to put it in my "Places to go when I go back but never did when I was there because I was a dumbass." list.

Penguin is good.  Their pimento cheese is great.

I really want to try Duke's now. My all time favorite is still Whataburger in Concord/Kannapolis. It's straight from the 60's.

Hell yea bro. With a witch doctor or some sun drop it was a good meal. Whataburger is another good place. I recommend Zacks if you haven't been. It's by south blvd but its on Scaleybark.  It is kind of like Whataburgers but better. Their burgers are sublime but my favorite is their steak sandwhich. It's just delicious. :D

Penguin unfortunately blows now. After the ownership debacle, everyone stopped going there and Penguin tanked. They actually declared bankruptcy a few months back. The guys that ran the Penguin (but didn't own it), now own and run the Diamond just down the block.

If you liked the burgers at Penguin, you must now go to the Diamond to eat them.

The new Penguin is pretty awful IMO. I've had two experiences there and was not a fan of the new menu.

    • Outside of cerrato, I do like our draft overall. Hard to get can't miss draft picks when you pick late in the draft
    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
