Wednesday afternoon San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was rewarded with one of the most lucrative contracts in NFL history following two straight trips to the NFC Championship Game plus a Super Bowl appearance.

However, he’s not the only successful young quarterback in the game today, and two of them will also be looking for new deals in the very near future – the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson and the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck.

And according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both of those young stars could surpass what Kaepernick was given by the 49ers (an average of $21M per year) on Wednesday.

Word around NFL is that when Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson get new deals next year, they will come in between $24-$25 million per year.

Lol @ Kaepernick's deal being $21MM per year. It's like $13MM with incentives and he can be cut anytime with no penalty.

And Russell Wilson may get a big deal, but Luck hasn't done a damn thing yet to deserve anything close to what they are saying, and I'm a Stanford fan and like the guy.

i will hope Cam takes a more friendly deal but i wouldn't bet on it and he deserves to get paid handsomely.

he's earned it and he's put the team on his back, taken double the hits of any qb in the league the past 3 years and is the face of the franchise.

one can hope that he does the team friendly deal but i would not hold any grudge if he didn't

On nfl.com they mention Cam.

As it turns out, Colin Kaepernick's new contract with the San Francisco 49ers is a lot more team-friendly than the original numbers suggested.

Over the next three years, Kaepernick is set to earn $44.17 million -- sixth among NFL quarterbacks.

NFL contracts are tricky because there are so many contingencies, clauses, bonuses and de-escalators. Since we have found that the easiest comparison tool is that three-year window, let's take a look at other quarterbacks in line for new contracts -- and what they might be expected to earn over three years.

Young franchise quarterbacks: Andrew LuckRussell WilsonCam Newton

Under the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement, Luck and Wilson are not even eligible for new contracts until next offseason. I believe Luck has the highest ceiling of any young quarterback in the league. And I think most executives, coaches and scouts share that sentiment. Wilson might not be as physically gifted, but he does bring the heft of a Super Bowl ring to the table.

Those two quarterbacks are expected to flirt with Aaron Rodgers' annual average of $24 million-$25 million once their extensions are inked. Their three-year window will likely settle into the $60 million range, near the highest-paid players in the league. Newton won't be far behind.

Second-tier veterans: Alex SmithAndy Dalton

No mention of RG3?

The thing pundits don't mention is that much of the money that is in Kaepernick's contract may never be seen. I remember when Vick got a 100 million contract ten years ago but he didn't see more than half of it.  If Kaepernick gets the whole contract amount he will have earned it.  I would be great with Cam getting a similar contract to Kaepernick with all those incentives.  If he earned all of those we will have won a superbowl or two and he will have deserved every penny.

I've got sources and I know Cam's contract situation. $18m/year is what he wants. Gettleman has laid $12m/year and some peanuts on the table and said take it or leave it. Cam considering it against the advice from his agent. Deal to get done within a week.
