Possible DE Trade?

Jeremy Igo

Recommended Posts

FACT : The Panthers have what probably is the deepest group of Defensive Ends in the entire NFL.

When NFL teams look for valuable trades, they first look to teams that have talent to spare in the position of need. We all know this, it is obvious. The Panthers have 3rd string defensive ends that would be definite second string or possibly even situational first string players around the NFL.

Here are the locks to make the team, in order of skill level:

Charles Johnson

Greg Hardy

Kony Ealy

Frank Alexander (after 4 game suspension)

Mario Addison

Wes Horton

Listed are 6 defensive ends that belong on NFL rosters. However, there is probably only room for 5 on the 53 man roster.

I smell a trade.

Gettleman just showed us last night with Kenjon Barner he has the inclination to get something for a player that would be otherwise cut. Smart, very smart.

So who is the odd man out?

Charles Johnson - nope

Greg Hardy - negative

Kony Ealy - not a chance

Frank Alexander.... maybe. Alexander has off field issues and was recently promoted by Ron Rivera as a "Camp MVP". All he needed was a dog or a little kid and he could have been on a morning car dealership commercial.

Mario Addison - Just signed an extension, unlikely

Wes Horton - hmmmmmmm

Wes Horton played 24 snaps against the Chiefs and did well. Rivera put him in with the first and second string. Odd for a guy that is not high on the depth chart.

Could it be that Gettleman and Rivera wanted scouts and GM's around the league to see Horton on film against legitimate offensive tackles? Very possible.

To summarize:

Lots of quality DE's.

Terrible OT depth.

Interesting playing time for Wes Horton....

Something may be going down.

Why fart away our young depth? Don't you wana keep grooming them to maybe replace the ferocious rotation we already have? Think beyond this year.. Long term... Which is what gettleman is thinking.

Charles is getting up there and Hardy is an expensive wild card. I wana keep our depth.

    • Cooter, Kurb, others have passed on to glory….  Praise be.
    • Oh good for them! Hope this is the start of a long happy time in their lives here.
    • There was no reason to believe in either Cam or Jake as a top tier elite QB before those seasons either. Cam was an "athletic" QB in most people's minds and his passing skills were open for debate. And there was a bit to that as he was still trying to get that massive power in his arm tamed to be able to put some touch on his passes. And then, he did it. Missiles became bombs, the firing lanes became points of finesse. Cam grew up and leveled up, while still retaining the ability and drive to truck people whenever he wanted. And Jake... no one freaking believed in Jake except Jake himself. He got, and let's be honest with this, one chance in a losing game to make something out of his career. And he rose to the occasion like some kind of mythical hero and continued to do so for the season. He became a true leader for the team, and his gunslinger capabilities rehabbed Moose's career and created Smitty as a force in the league. Smitty went from a barker to a biter. But no one believed in Jake going in. And they trashed him on his way out. Now Bryce... who knows? I've seen some improvement. Maybe he finds his footing. His teammates seem to love and respect him and that means a lot. The game should be moving at his speed now. He has weapons available to him and maybe a defense that doesn't just roll over by the third quarter. And his coach seems to be moving this team in the right direction. Could he do it? It's up to him, if he can find the magic like Jake and Cam did. But don't doubt this, magic is really, really hard to find.
