An interesting point was made on a show this morning...

They rushed fast OLB's on the edges all game long, and it destroyed the Panthers all day, starting with the very first snap.

Why do you think they are putting Jason Williams in at DE to practice against now? Hint: its not because they play on putting him in at DE for a game.

But the bears don't have any fast pass rushers? I mean unless the Panthers are really overly concerned with Willie Young blowing up.

The Panthers struggled in the interior just as much as they did against edge rushers. They got manhandled up the middle by the Lions.

They're just not playing well right now. I don't really think there's one kind of player we suffer against more than others at this point.

Herm Edwards brought up the point of o-line play across the league being poor at the start of the season partly due to lack of practice time thanks to the current CBA and another part of that being injuries.  Its an interesting point as a only a few teams have all of their starters intact from the previous season, and those teams playing better on the o-line.  I wonder if this part of the CBA could be revisited during the offseason.

Please spare me the "o-line sucks", "Shula is a terrible OC" and "Gettleman is a terrible person" stuff.  I say that knowing the first replies to this are gonna be troll replies.  If I'm proven wrong, I'll be impressed.

So, what changed from this year to last year? Or from 2011 to now? The OLine play isn't suffering because of the CBA. Our OLine play is suffering because of two UDFAs, a rookie, a guy coming off an ACL injury, and Kalil.

It's not a league wide issue.

I voiced my concerns early in camp about how loose practices were. Hardly any contact at all, far more non padded days than padded days.

But I think our woes come from two tackles who are severely inexperienced against playing 3-4 defenses. Neither have played against them before this season in their current position, and neither had hardly any practice going against it all offseason.

They didn't look bad against Tampa and Detroit at all who run the standard 4-3 the guys were used to seeing and had plenty of practice against.

If they do well this week, we definitely will see the root cause of the poor play over the past two weeks.

I 100% agree with you Jeremy. And if you look back, you'll see that it's not just this year's offensive line that has trouble with 3/4 Ds, The Panthers have historically struggled with 3/4 schemes.

I've seen similar criticism from other sources.

I go back to the concessions that the Players Association got in the last CBA. Since the new practice rules were instituted, the overall quality of play around the League has gone down, especially in the trenches. Beyond that, from what I can tell the number of injuries, and even serious injuries, has actually gone up rather than down.

Truthfully, I think that whole thing has been counterproductive.

Bell has played for years and we know he is weak. He got promoted to a tougher job somehow.

Chandler is a converted DT

Amini has never been solid

And our RG spot is rookie/bandaid committee.

I think talent not chemistry is the issue

could you differentiate between fast pass rushers standing up vs coming from having a hand in the ground? that seems to be the primary difference to me. maybe it's mental (diagnosing who to block) or maybe it's physical (bell may handle guys coming off the ground in front of him better than he does with a guy who has three yards of steam behind him coming around the edge) or maybe both.

i think he gets to face jared allen this sunday, so we'll see how well he handles powerful 4-3 ends

I think the Panthers O-line would be struggling with or without the new CBA.  It really is surprising at how the Panthers have 'over-looked' the O-line the past few years.  I think most of us thought the o-line was the biggest concern this season.  Hopefully, the make it a top priority this offseason.

2009:  The Panthers had two 1,000 yard RB's, and the O-line was:  LT -Gross (1st Round), LG- Wharton (3rd Round), C - Kalil (2nd Round), RG (Vincent - UDFA), and RT - Otah (1st Round).  Two 1st rounders in LT & RT.  Today, two UDFA for LT & RT.

Today - The players are not even close to the attention we gave the O-line in 2009.

The problem with this thinking, is that you are saying that we had chances to fix it.  We had a couple, but not that many.  And with so much money tied up in the anchors named DWill and Stew, we just couldn't jump into free agency.

The biggest issue, IMO, was not having a capable back up to Gross when he decided to hang them up.  Again, should have drafted Cordy Glenn rather than Amini, let him play RT and move to LT when Gross left.

Outside of that, there have only been a couple shots to improve our OL.

    • The bad thing is that Xavier Legette kind of ignored the Jugs machine his rookie season. The good thing is that he's committed to it now. Catching is important to an NFL receiver (sarcasm), but, perhaps just as important is a receiver's---any player's---mindset.  "This offseason, the young wideout has gotten back to something in terms of preparation (Jugs machine). 'Oh man, it’s always been something I’ve done, and I don’t know why, but I felt like I could take a little breath,' explained Legette (via Darin Gantt of Panthers.com). 'And when you’re playing in this game, you can never do that. It’s always a way to get better, and that’s one of the ways to help with catching. For sure, for sure. In my mind, I’m thinking about ways, things I can do. What can I do to have less drops this coming season in Year 2? 'The whole mindset has changed, man,' added Legette. 'Trying to do anything I got to. I’m sacrificing a lot of things that I used to do outside of the building to put my work inside the building.'" https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/xavier-legette-focused-on-reducing-drops-that-plagued-rookie-year-with-panthers-01k1692c0tz9 So, yeah, it wasn't good coming in taking some things for granted, but Legette is young. His mentality appears to have changed and he appears to be maturing and he's been putting in a lot of work by all accounts.  I know some of you are down on him, but I still have faith. Last season was a disjointed mess in its entirety, but there were still some flashes, particularly with route running. With Legette's seemingly better fit as the WR2, mindset and focus---doing his actual job catching the ball---he should be able to improve.
    • It is worth noting the fanbase has long held a love hate relationship with PFF over the years. Now that we are employing some of their people and actively using their data in our roster building approach going forward this should serve as the end all be all to any debate. This is either going to end really well or really bad. It's the Panthers. So save your energy and give it some time.
    • And to be honest, we weren't really talking about PFF grades either. I brought it into the conversation via a pic that's LLM-related (which apparently some Huddlers took issue with) as an aside for providing more specificity than just sheer numbers
