Engagement Rings

Diamonds are one area where I would encourage you to leverage connections if you got 'em.

I got a steal because my boss was friends since elementary school with a reputable diamond dealer. Got an amazing, custom fitted ring with a stone that was appraised at 40% more than I spent on the whole ring.

Oh, yeah. BTW, I got engaged on Sunday.

Where should I look? I've been checking out Blue Nile and some local jewelers but this seems like a bigger markup than printer ink.

Just did this last year myself and went with Blue Nile.  Haven't been disappointed in the least, and I had high expectations

SO I am buying a diamond tomorrow from NYC. I can save around $2k by going non-certified but am not going to do it.

Anyone made the choice between certified and non?

Saving around 40% over blue nile for a certified BTW

Was in the same boat recently. Couldn't justify going non certified. Just seems like too easy of a scam. I'd say fork over the extra dough to be sure you got what they say you're getting. Somebody else with more experience with non certified may say otherwise though.

Thanks.

I get the idea. If it is someone reputable they will have gone through the same process basically and will be outed quickly if they are selling subpar diamonds. And what is the resale market for diamonds anyway?

Having said that I am paying $2k for a piece of paper it seems.

Seriously,y current wife doesn't wear jewelry except to dressy or black-tie events. We discussed rings before we discussed the wedding and she agreed to go with me one day to look at diamonds. She found one she liked and asked me what we could do with the money the we were staring at on the price tag.

A week in Aruba, followed by a week in Jackson Hole followed by a week of rafting on the Gawley, Nantahala and New Rivers. We did them in reverse order since we lived in Asheville at the time, and for the next 2 1/2 years she never forgot to tell me how much happier she was to travel with me than wear a ring that likely would have gotten lost at one of those places.
