Stars lack of tackles and sacks lands him here. Hard to measure success at his position tho. The LBs he is tasked with keeping clean were both almost pro bowlers and KK had a superb year getting to the QB. So...if he's playing the NT in our D I gauge his success more by unit success than anything else.

Star does an alright job clogging the middle he does sometimes beat his man or men off the ball and gets into the backfield in a hurry he just hasn't been able to make a play. What you don't get with star are those splash plays that KK gets. It is only his 2nd season and remember most DTs take a couple years to get into their prime

Hooray for SI doing their homework.  Oh, wait...

Lotulelei rolled his ankle in the Week 10 loss to Philadelphia and missed the next two games. But that hasn’t been the sole cause of his less-than-desirable season.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera pointed to Carolina’s moving Lotulelei around this season as part of the reason his numbers aren’t up. The team has used him as a tackle over the offensive guard and a nose tackle lined up over center.

“At defensive tackle you’re going to have the games where there aren’t a lot of plays for you to make,” fellow tackle Dwan Edwards said. “He’s been in position to make some big plays and maybe someone else didn’t do their job. It’s tough because you need everyone working together for you to be successful, and sometimes it just doesn’t happen.”

The biggest problem for Star was not having Hardy next to him. You had to double Hardy which meant Star was singled most of last year. With Hardy gone teams could double Star and neutralize him. Imagine what we would have had if Hardy joined Star, Short and Johnson this year. At least one if not as many as three of them could have been playing at a probowl level. The lack of push by our DEs for much of the early season were a big reason why our secondary was so poor. That and the overall lack of speed along and poor tackling were a recipe for disaster. Our tackles were susceptible to losing gap integrity in an attempt to pressure the play and instead give up a big run play up the middle. We gave up so many big plays on third down where last year we were shutting them down. It took players like Benwikere and Boston to come in and set an aggressive tone to challenge the veterans to step up their game.

    • Or its more likely coordinators got film on him and turned the screws
    • I'm too lazy to make my own format so I am stealing yours.  Week 1: Sept. 8 at New Orleans  (W) 17-6 Running game and Derek Carr having a horrible opener gets the win. Week 2: Sept 15 vs. Los Angeles Chargers (L) 24-10 Hype from Week 1 goes away when Harbaugh and Herbert show up. Week 3: Sept 22 at Las Vegas  (W) 16-13 Complete defensive struggle but Panthers win on last minute FG.  Week 4: Sept. 29 vs. Cincinnati  (L) 30-13 Score is actually worse but Panthers score in garbage time. Week 5: Oct. 6 at Chicago (L) 21-10 Horrible performance by Bryce in a winnable game and even his fans start to think he's not it, press conference questions get worse and calls for benching intensifies.  Week 6: Oct. 13 vs. Atlanta (L) 20-17 Running game becomes 70% of offense to help Bryce, it works but can't get job done at the end. Week 7: Oct. 20 at Washington  (W) 21-14 Running game/defensive comes through; Bryce does okay. Week 8: Oct. 27 at Denver (L) 27-7 Complete offensive collapse. Week 9: Nov. 3 vs. New Orleans (L) 30-24 Saints keep shooting themselves in the foot but we provide them a turnover-fest and they come back in the 2nd half.  Week 10: Nov. 10 vs. N.Y. Giants (Munich, Germany) (L) 24-6 Worse offensive performance of our season. Week 11: Nov. 17 BYE Week 12: Nov. 24 vs. Kansas City (L) 34-31 OT Dalton takes over for Bryce to try to salvage season. Plays close game; gives team a slight bump. Week 13: Dec. 1 vs. Tampa Bay (W) 28-27 Dalton has nice game. Canales beats his former team in a stunner.  Week 14: Dec 8 at Philadelphia (L) 27-14 Tough crowd, tough game, run out of gas in the 4th.  Week 15: Dec: 15 vs. Dallas (L) 31-24 This will be out "worse officiated game of the year." and we will all accuse the NFL of trying to get the Cowboys in the postseason. Week 16: Dec. 22 vs. Arizona (W) 26-10 Solid win by Dalton and co.  Week 17: Dec. 29 at Tampa Bay (W) 12-10 Canales sweeps his former team and knocks them out of the postseason in an absolute rain fest. Week 18: Jan. 4 or 5 at Atlanta (L) 28-20 Close game but Atlanta holds us off.    Panthers finish 6-11. Dalton's mediocre performance shows just how bad Young really was. Panthers start the search for the next QB.
    • Want to see something crazy?  Look in Bryce stats after Dallas game.  They parked Bryce and told him to play conservative. Bryce first 9 games: 9 TDs, 8 Int, ~1,600 total yards.   Bryce last 8 games: 2 TD, 2 Int, ~1,600 total yards.  With just 1 game over 200 yards passing.  If you remove that game… Bryce is 0 TDs, 2 Int, and 1,300 total yards in 7 games. Just disaster the way the handled him.  Dude regressed as the season went on.  He took zero chance.  Just stayed in the pocket and got pounded.
