Prepping for Black Monday

Not entirely, not sure that he is accurate enough, nor has the desire to throw to "spots".

However, more experience, and notably, better coaching may cover that issue.

I believe we desperately need changes to the offensive and special teams areas, but I'm not sure we'll get them.

I still think Rivera should be let go too but I'm not optimistic on that front.

Let's focus all of our positive energies on offensive changes.

Helmet teams (because they're not just regular special) aren't as important---field position can be overcome by a competent offensive coordinator.  Shula's idea of coordination resembles a quadriplegic elephant.

One thing to note, re: offense.

The last time we hired an OC, Rivera's candidates included a WCO guy (Pat Shurmur).

That fact led me to question whether or not Rivera actually took the kind of system they would run into consideration.

He most definitely should, but it's possible he won't. A defensive guy like Rivera might just think 'hey, offense is offense', but that's not really true.

Given his track record, I'm worried about Rivera botching any new hires.

Atlanta has hired a 'consultant' too (Joe Banner). Probably doesn't speak well for Mike Smith and could be bad news for Thomas Dimitroff too.

Meanwhile, reports say the University of Michigan is in touch with Jim Harbaugh.

Interesting.....I wonder if old Mikey has sweatty palms about now while watching tape of our game vs NO.

I'm not sure that a good OC couldn't implement any offense.  So much of what they do is wrapped around play-calling and preparation, and all of them run elements of the three major offensive systems at any given time.  I think that if I'm the HC and looking for my coordinators, my first thought is to someone who can effectively run his unit on game day.

Basically my way of saying that I would cut RR a lot of slack for looking at a WCO guy--he knows more about what he needs than any of us here.  But with that said, if he did I would probably spend a lot of time trying to understand why.

I'm going to wait to pass judgement on Rivera.  If he has a good showing in the playoffs (and I'm counting the Falcons game as a playoff game) I'd at least give him another year.

I don't even necessarily think Shula should go.  As bland as our offense can be, I think it could actually become a dominant, simple offense considering our roster youth.  Solidify that line and acquire another weapon and I think we'd have enough talent to consistently move down the field.

Would the Getti have more say so in hirings?
