Report: Panthers Not Expected To Bring Back Hardy

This is Gettleman's way of letting the news out slowly. His office is behind this latest news.

I don't think that's it. I don't think he has changed his mind much since he tagged him. Still there is a chance he stays with a cap friendly deal but it a small one.

to be fair... hardy was just now entering his prime. he was a 5th (?) round draft pick, and wasn't expected to come in and dominate like a #2 overall pick was. peppers also never reached 15 sacks. for all we know hardy could have put up 20 sacks this season.

not saying hardy is better than peppers, but hardy was a monster in his own right.

not doubt he's a monster but Peppers was proven... haters don't like that.... the bottom line is those were our best DEs thus far, then CJ and Rucker. but that's just my opinions.

nevertheless, considering this info may be true, one would have to assume we are going to step up our offense heavily this year and secondary.

This is Gettleman's way of letting the news out slowly. His office is behind this latest news.

Reminds me of two things I really wish more fans would catch on to.

Number One: The decision on this isn't being made by Jerry Richardson.

It's being made by Dave Gettleman.  Jerry Richardson's role is simply tacit approval / non-interference.

As I've said many times, anyone who wants to question that should take a moment and answer what color jersey Steve Smith is wearing these days.

Number Two: It isn't an image decision.  It's a business decision.

Here's a challenge.  Go to a bookie and bet ten thousand dollars of your own money that Greg Hardy will stay completely out of trouble for the next five years.  Don't have ten thousand to bet?  Put up your car, or your house, or something else of value.

You comfortable with that?

Well, the Panthers would be wagering a whole lot more than ten thousand on that bet if they offer Hardy a big contract.  And please don't give me the "he'll play for less" argument.  He reportedly turned down a more than fair 8 million per year contract before he was franchised.  It's delusional to think he'll actually play for cheap given his past actions.

And let's be clear: Ron Rivera wants him back.  He's made it plain in many things he's said, but it's not his decision.

Given Rivera's track record when it comes to personnel decisions, that's probably a good thing.

Basically the Panthers need to spend the money they were paying Hardy and go sign someone who can block him because he could easily sign with Atlanta, Tampa, Seattle, Dallas...or any other host of teams that we play next year.  If they trot out Byron Bell to block Greg Hardy I might as well write Cam Newton's obituary now.

Hope JR liked watching how the Kraken twisted up Drew Brees and caused him to have nightmares and wet the bed because our rivals are in the football business and would love nothing more than to release the Kraken on Cam Newton.

But we'll have the nicest most wholesome group of guys golly gee.

Until our team stops carrying the torch for the NFL we will never win anything.

How has Jerry's loyalty rewarded Carolina fans?

How many new trophy cases have we needed because we just need those robots that don't act like people act.

You can't give a kid 10 million dollars, throw hot chicks, booze, steroids, and drugs at them and expect to get straight laced choir boys.

Who's kidding who here? It's like a bad practical joke.

Lol to Cam fans/bandwagoners maybe...but lifelong panther fans know it doesn't even crack the top 15 maybe 20.

That actually would be a good topic for a thread, something like "Name your top ten worst moments as a Carolina fan" might produce some interesting conversation about our team pre Cam/Keek

I'm becoming fine with this move. My only issue is where does the pass rush come from now? CJ has to stay healthy and the panthers will have to find someone to complement him in free agency or the draft. I like Kony Ealy and he played well the latter part of the season. But you can't bet on him that he will have a consistent pass rush next season.

    • Bryce among the 7 players Mark Ross of NFL.com guarantees will get better this season. Today, I am identifying seven players who I guarantee will improve on their 2024 output in the 2025 season. Young took tremendous strides in 2024 after returning to the starting lineup in Week 8 following his benching. He looked far more comfortable in his return and produced with consistency, as he threw for 2,104 yards with 15 TDs and six INTs in the final 10 contests. Most important perhaps is Young's confidence grew immensely down the stretch, leading Carolina to either a game-tying or game-winning drive in six of those games. Now he enters his second season in Dave Canales' system with his best supporting cast to date. The Panthers drafted wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan eighth overall to pair with Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette, who I also believe is poised for a breakout campaign this fall. The 18th-ranked rushing attack from a year ago added Rico Dowdle to complement Chuba Hubbard, giving the team a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. The Panthers have taken the necessary steps to ensure Young's third season will be the best of his career, and now it's up to him to not only continue to grow as a player but prove why he was worthy of being taken No. 1 overall in 2023. I believe that's what he will do. https://www.nfl.com/news/which-nfl-players-will-improve-in-2025-c-j-stroud-deebo-samuel-among-guaranteed-risers
    • While it's fair to question how impactful a player's relationship with a coach is (especially if someone has questions regarding said coach), it's important to also evaluate the difference between the players here. Jordan Fuller was pick #199 in the 6th round while Justin Simmons was #98 in the 3rd round. Jordan Fuller might have gotten a Super Bowl ring while he was with the Rams, but he got it while on the IR. Justin Simmons, on the other hand, is a x2 Pro-Bowler (2020, 2023), x4 second-team All-Pro (2019, 2021 - 2023), and was the NFL co-leader in INTs (2022). Simmons has also fallen off in the last couple of seasons though, grade-wise. He very well might not be that same player, which could be why the Falcons have elected to replace him with Fuller. As far as getting the best out of what he has, asking him to produce with a starting DL of A'Shawn Robinson (63.56% of the defense's snaps), LaBryan Ray (51.48%), and Shy Tuttle (50.08%) isn't reasonable. Wonnum only played in 8 games, but had the second most % of snaps (37.27%) at EDGE behind Clowney (53.53%). The second-string DL based on snap % was... and don't read this if you just ate... Charles Harris (34.48%), DeShawn Williams (27.67%), and Nick Thurman (19.7%). The second-string EDGEs based on snap count would be DJ Johnson (32.27%) and Cam Gill (18.14%). With the investments made in the run defense this season though, especially on the defensive line, it's more than fair to demand a complete turn around from last season.
