Taking less money

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Word out of Green Bay is that before accepting his new contract from the Packers, Randall Cobb was actually offered a deal that would have paid him two million a year higher by the Oakland Raiders.

Although relatively rare, stories of players taking less money from one team than they might have made elsewhere do happen every so often.  Our own Mike Tolbert is an example.  He turned down a higher offer from San Diego than what he ultimately signed for from the Panthers.  Not two million a year higher, mind you, but higher nonetheless.

So, putting yourself in the shoes of an NFL free agent (admittedly nice shoes to be in) can you imagine a situation where you'd walk away from something like two million a year to play somewhere else?

if so, what sorts of things would factor into that decision?

I think some people are too focused on the money side. Yes money is important but people are different. They are motivated by different things. To assume every player is only after money generalizes all of the players and, Imo, keeps us from looking at them as people.

Might be a smart move in the long run by Cobb.  He's only 24. He'll hit the open market again at 28, plenty young enough to land another big deal.  He'll likely be far better positioned to do that by continuing on with Rodgers and GB than he would be by rolling the dice and going to Oakland.  Could make a lot bigger difference than $2M per year on his next deal.

I think Cobb's situation is a little different. He's only 24 and if he goes out to Oakland now there's a chance he falls off the face of the earth without a QB and isn't a big deal when he hits the market again. He stays with Rodgers in GB and has another solid 4 years, he'll hit the market again at 28 and could possibly get another solid contract.

Edit: LG beat me to it

Exactly this.

While I'm sure it's tempting to take a higher salary now, Cobb is playing it smart by sticking with the best QB in the game.

The philosophy of the management, the coaching, whether or not the team has a good chance of winning, my role, the camaraderie between teammates, the team culture, whether my family liked the community, how deeply embedded that my roots are within the community and whether I see the place as "home",  standard of living, taxes, etc. etc.

Valid, but to be fair a lot of these guys have families to take care of.

Would you wanna go tell your wife and kids you just turned down two million a year extra?

That depends on if I'm already making millions or peanuts.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
