Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a "rare phenomena" and youth football is safer than riding a bike or skateboard, a Pittsburgh Steelers neurosurgeon and NFL medical consultant said Wednesday in response to the retirement of San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland.

Borland told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" this week that he wants to protect himself from the risk of future brain injury. Appearing on NFL Network, Dr. Joseph Maroon -- who advises the NFL on head, neck and spine injury -- said the game "has never been safer" and downplayed the risk of CTE based on current data.

he did say "youth football" but I guess we're just gonna ignore that

Yep. Youth football is very safe. I've been at 30 or so youth games the past few years and I've never once seen a serious injury or even a concussion.

I watched Tolbert almost kill Eric Reid.

To be fair, that was 100% on Reid. Shoulda read the scouting report : ).

I think a young Thomas Davis ended a promising Green Bay rookie wide receiver's career in football.

TD has laid some impeccably nasty hits on people.  Aaron Rodgers cited a hit from him once as being the hardest hit he'd ever taken and was feeling it long into the playoffs.

    • And we get our starting 5 on the oline back.  Hunt is a beast
    • Upfront, I was disappointed with the games last year. After it was all said and done, there really seemed to be an overwhelming hope that something similar to the basketball tournament would be created with this format. Cinderellas work in basketball for a few reasons, notably 1 player can have far more impact, positive or negative, on a 5-person team. Every year there are a handful of teams that have a real claim to being a national champion contender. James Madison and Tulane have no shot. The same thing can be said about most of the other teams in the field. Expanding it to more and more teams isn't going to have the effect of bringing in more contenders. It will have the effect of making up more 1-sided games instead. But, it is more football. Quantity over quality I guess. I can't wait until it moves up to 20 or 24 teams, or even more. Let every team in with 7 wins. That is bowl-eligible, plus 1. Maybe this year will be different and it will be full of good, close games, with compelling performances between the very best teams in the country. I kind of doubt it though.
    • 17 games with the kind of load where you gain over 200 yards a game even half the time there isn’t a back who won’t get beat down and that not show up on the field.  I think the best answer is keep the OL strong enough for regular guys to run for gains.  Let people sign our one year wonders to the bigger deals and just reload.  The only real inhibitor there is pass blocking. You have to have guys that are decent at it.
