This whole drafting the best player available talk around here is ridiculous

The way at least some teams (and probably most) do it is every player has a number value and put on the board, and need is factored into that value.

So it is really best value available more than best player available.

Plus BPA becomes more important in rounds 3-7

Lol I'm not so sure that's the common theme around here. Most people know that you draft BPA based on your needs. As long as the BPA fits a need we'll draft him. We don't need a DT, OG, QB, RB, or CB in the first but any other position is fair game.

That is 100% correct. Why some people can't realize it, is way beyond me.

Da fuq are you talking about? Cam was most definitely the BPA. I jest, but he was, and still is of that draft.

Yep. 4 quarterbacks drafted in the first round and only he is still in the league. Maybe Watt and Jones have been bigger stars but in terms of who has would have had the most impact would any of them meant more to us than Cam. I would rather see Cam throwing to Benjamin than I would have Clausen throwing to Jones or Watt making the defense even better but having a moribund offense whose point output increased dramatically once Cam took over. Cam is the best thing that has happened to the Panthers since Jake and Steve were tearing up the league. Everyone knows that including Gettleman. Look how long Eli was ordinary before he took them to the Super Bowl.

But I am preaching to the choir. We agree...

So if a Mariota is available should we draft him? What about another DT?

Some of you are taking this whole BPA thing out of context.

The last two first rounds we drafted for need. Cam would have never been a panther by some your guys logic.

We are not in the panthers war room during the draft so who are we to say this guy is the BPA.

We will pick the best player available. (within reason) Gettleman doesn't want to reach, so if Mariota falls expect a trade. If BPA doesn't match a need or an upgrade possibility, we may trade back. Or, we may draft the Mariota type and then trade him alone or packaged. Getts won't settle. IMO

JJ Watt, Green, Peterson where all ranked ahead of him

Watt went like 16th or something.  Nobody thought he'd turn into the player he did (they thought he'd be good no doubt).

Pretty sure 3 or 4 pass rushers went ahead of him too.

Positional value is also considered.  QB is still considered to be the most valuable position by a good margin, followed by LT, DE then CB.

He was the Best Player Available to the Panthers that's why it took Gettleman 3 seconds to turn in a draft card for him.

Just because Mel Kiper's Board doesn't show him as best available doesn't mean the team doesn't have him as BPA.

Kiper and most of these other big draft experts have been way off the mark these past few drafts.  Teams are finally wising up by not listening to them.  They are also looking more at private workouts, pro days and film and putting less emphasis on combine statistics.

Some idiots are still falling for it, like the Rams taking Greg Robinson (I think thats his name, the combine freak LT) at #2 overall just to have him be a struggling backup guard.

While I understand money is an issue we better find a way to keep Star and KK.

Star should be relatively easy to retain.  Though I felt he took a big step back last year, I think he's a long term player here.

KK might be difficult to keep.  He's so explosive and disruptive behind the LOS he'll have leverage and be in high demand.

In my perfect world we lock up Cam, Luke, Norman, Star and Short next season when we've got nearly half our cap space available.  Might not be able to touch Star and Short yet though with the whole CBA and rookie contract thing.

I think we'll be on the lookout this draft/offseason for another DT to make one somewhat expendable and because Cole and Dwan are really getting up there in age.
