The problem with fully guaranteed contracts is that it would change the way the NFL operates if they become commonplace. That fully guaranteed money has to be paid the moment the player signs. If these types of contracts become more common, the teams owned by the richest owners are going to have a major upper hand despite the efforts of a hard salary cap to keep a level playing field.

I don't think guaranteed contracts are going to be the norm in the NFL anytime soon, with the injuries that happen and players losing motivation after big paydays. Besides, most players will live to see almost all the money on their contract if they keep up their level of play. I will pass on making 60mil over 5 yrs when I could make 100mil.

They are a very good team, but they didn't even deserve to be in the Super Bowl.

Eventually their luck will reverse. It may already have.

I don't know why people think this has a bearing on Cam's contract. Russell deserves MORE money than Cam imo. He's done much more throughout his short career.

Because it has an influence in setting the market. It's been said many times that the Wilson and Luck contracts will show where Cam is to be paid. Lower? Yes. But it sets the ceiling.

As far as injury goes, yes that's always a concern. Which is why it wouldn't become the norm but instead would be used on select players. Cam has shown, in my opinion, a resilience that warrants a fully guaranteed contract.

And a fully guaranteed contract still affects the salary cap. It wouldn't have to be paid like a bonus. So rich owners wouldn't have any advantage.

Fully guaranteed money does have to be paid like a bonus though. It doesn't go immediately to the player, but the owner still has to write a check for the full amount and it gets put in escrow until it is paid to the player. The Dolphins owner has to write a $60M check this year for Suh even though Suh only gets $25M of it this year. Paul Allen can write a $100M check without blinking while Jerry cannot so there is certainly an advantage for extremely rich owners. So far that hasn't been an issue and Stephen Ross is the first owner to go with a huge full guarantee in his contract with Suh.
