Why Picking up Jonathan Martin was a Waste of Time...

I haven't brought up the whole bullying thing.  I don't want to, but perhaps that did have something do with his play back in 2012.  I think once it came to a head back in 2013, Martin actually began playing better that year I would imagine.  Of course they did keep him at RT, so I don't know.

I hear you, but we got to get Cam some adequate protection soon.  Of course depending on what Jake Long plans on doing, we need to be looking his direction.  In spite of his injury history.  That is the kind of move I'm waiting for.

Hope he signs with Tampa after the draft. Can't block Kony Ealy from the trainer's room. I'd understand your point if he wasn't so banged up. He had ankle and foot injuries in college, back and biceps injuries in Miami that sent him to IR in 2011, and now has been on IR for St.Louis in 2013 and 2014 with torn ACLs.

I understand giving talented injured players a chance when they're young (like under 26), but he's turning 30 in May and his injury history isn't in the distant past.

You can make a highlight video like that of literally any player in any sport.

I could make a 10 minute highlight video of Michael Jordan bricking shots, missing dunks, turning the ball over, getting scored on, etc. It proves nothing.

You wanna see e an embarrassing highlight reel?

Look up Larry Allen facing Reggie White in his rookie season. White was playing with only one good arm, but he was still literally throwing Allen around.

But hey, that guy never amounted to anything, right?

This is a solid point that in all honesty puts the film in perspective. That said, is Jonathan Martin a long term fix for our OL? I seriously doubt it and don't think G man is feeling it either. Is our OL better now than a year ago? On paper yes. Marin and Oher are not fixtures, they are band aids. Band aids that we could not afford last year (although Martin is cheap ) or could not sign for whatever reason. Lose the hate. The team is moving in the right direction.

Okay I understand all that, and I also hear everyone about the rookie stuff.  Yet, I still think this is ultimately a bad pick up.  I wanted to let Bell walk to get rid of the rift raft.  I think we just replaced Bell with another guy who is similar.  By the way, I found this next video to be really funny...

OL in their first and even second year olin the league look like they are on roller skates and typically get beaten, esp. by very good defensive fronts. thats the the same with pretty much every OL taken regardless of where they are selected including the first round. very few of the guys taken in even the first 5-10 picks don't have that happen to them.

you find a couple games very early on his career where he gets beat and expect that to be your case for picking him up on the cheap was a waste of time? seems to me the only onea wasting time were the ones opening up this thread.

you found what you wanted to find....some glimmer of proof that martin is the soft turd you believe him to be because you just can't get over the fact that your team picked him up because they see something you don't or are at least willing to have what you don't have...an open mind.

    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
    • Certainly not going to miss his constant whiffs on sacks and tackles.
