Nicks not ready to call it a life. A good plan B in case Jennings never comes?

Well, while Greg Jennings is playing with the sensibilities of much too serious fans on social media, Hakeem Nicks is still out there with little time to play, seriously trying to find a team. It appears like the way that he is talking (or not), that the lack of a market for him has kind of humbled him in a way. He realizes that he has a lot to prove to be more than a footnote in the minds of NFL types everywhere.

Nicks, who was once viewed as having great potential and upside, is not even being taken seriously by Panthers fans in his hometown. And after a fairly weird visit with Dave Gettleman last off season, one can only wonder if he has any value in the minds of the Panthers' FO.

A fallen Nicks is right about one thing though, his game tape toward the end of the season showed flashes of the pre-injury Nicks, who at 27 may turn out to be a better value than Greg Jennings after all is said and done. Still a long shot to be considered anything more than what Writer Kevin Patra intimated as a "bit-role" receiver, Nicks' ability to make some nice catches the latter part of the season is undeniable for anyone that studied his catches.

"If you actually look at the film, you'll see I had my burst back last year. I got everything back," he said. "For two years, when I was coming off the broke foot and PCL (sprain) in the knee, it took some time to get back. But last year, if you put the film on, you'll see I was beating guys off the line of scrimmage, beating guys downfield in my routes."

Even with his productivity late last season, a time in which he arguably did show spurts of being perhaps greater than either of the last two free agents with a viable game, Jennings or Crabtree (other than possibly Mike Williams who may be done), one problem that Nicks has always had is his seeming diva-esque attitude. But, like I intimated earlier, that seems to be in check, and Nicks is obviously healthier than he has been in a while. That being said, would anyone still consider him a good plan B if the Panthers and Jennings never tie the knot? At this late time in free agency, when we are supposedly still in the market for Jennings, would a cheap deal for a motivated Nicks provide the same type of feeling of security?

A good reason to never burn bridges or play games is in full view right here. Who knows what really went down last year between him and D.G. My guess is he was asking way to much while projecting a lack of interest in the role offered him.

He may be sitting on his sofa untill a team is hard up for WR help due to injuries.

Actually, maybe we would be better to wait until the draft so Gman can feel more compelled to get some new blood up in the receiving core. I am almost sure that we will draft one, but I want two. So maybe Jennings and Nicks should go elsewhere.

If Nicks is back to form then yes he would be a better player than Jennings and he is younger. From the looks of all the teams talking to Jennings you would think that Nicks would cost a lot less money.

For the right price I could see us sign him and if he does turn out to be healthy then we will get a deal.

I know he is humble now and when no NFL wants to sign you it's understandable but if he does return to form I believe that diva attitude will return.

    • I think Canales goes before Young in that scenario.
    • But that's the point, if the locker room feels that way, then you're going to upset them by still keeping Bryce around and playing him over the Top 10 pick, as opposed to bringing in a vet to start until the rookie is ready. Again, it goes one of 3 ways... 1. Bryce plays well enough to earn an extension 2. Bryce still sucks and we draft his replacement who starts Week 1 with a new QB as his backup 3. Bryce still sucks, we draft his replacement in the 1st, but they start the season backing up a new vet QB who was brought in to be his mentor. With an OUTSIDE chance at a 4th option where Bryce plays well enough to convince the team to let him play out the 5th year option and then make a decision.  Which I can't see it happening, but there is still a non zero chance of that happening I guess. The only way we draft a QB next year and still have Bryce on the roster, is if we're taking someone in the middle rounds hoping to develop them as a long term backup to Bryce.
    • I hear you. But I am not absolving Legette just because he is from my neck of the woods or anything else.  Tge comment was more about the fans uneven application of blame.  I do agree that there is a noticeable disconnect between him and the QB and that he might do better with a more polished and capable delivery man.  Abd don’t feel that they used XL right, or at least how I expected it to look.  And that could be a function of a reticent WB that shies away from that style of attack. I mean it was either him or Canales that pretty much eliminated downfield from the playbook - even while we see guys running free at times. It Could work if they commit to it.  Whoever isn’t committing.
