This Devin Funchess guy...(WR Michigan)

Fist of all the guy that Funchess is often compared to on draft sites is you guessed it, Kelvin Benjamin. Secondly, while he ran a 4.7 at the combine he ran a 4.47 at his pro day which was faster than Benjamin (4.61) and great for a guy that size.  What he brings to the table is 6'4" 232 lbs with a huge wingspan and good athleticism.  He went from being one of the best athletic hybrid guys to an after thought due to 2 tenths of a second on the 40.  Forget he had a 4.68 shuttle and a 6.98 3 cone and is only a junior coming out of college.

He would be a good second rounder unless the Panthers really see Stephen Hill as a real possibility at which point we need a slot receiver more than a number 2.  I know there is no guarantee Hill will do anything but Proehl was very high on him and really didnt need to say anything if he wasnt impressed by him.

He could be a hybrid TE and WR and would add a nice weapon in the second round.

I dont understand why some of you would pass on such a talent for the sole fact that you'd rather have someone with more speed. Ted Ginn has great speed and will help our offense with the deep threat. Take the best player available and if it happens to be Funchess than I'd be happy to have him

I'm telling you not to be shocked if the Panthers grab him in the second round.

Benjamin, Funchess, Olsen...

That's a whole lot of red zone threat.

The nice thing too is we'd be ensuring a really solid receiving trio for a while given their contracts.  Awesome sauce.

I like Funchess.

Does anyone know why he gets the /TE moniker? I assume it's not just size, he's smaller than KB.

Because he plays glacially slow and sucks as a WR so people want him to play TE where he is a better fit athletically and he played there earlier in his career. Problem there is he isn't tough and is a bad blocker.

Seems your opinion isnt shared by most other scouts.  He ran a 4.47 pro day 40 and has similar measurables to Benjamin.  He isnt a bad blocker and no one says he is soft.  Take your pick of sites:

The biggest knocks are that is still somewhat raw and doesnt use his size to his advantage which is just as much about coming out as a junior when he could have used another year of seasoning.  He is not ready to start day 1 as some other guys are, but his upside is as big as Benjamin. picking him in the second would be a great investment in our wide receiver future.

Hell we might see him taken in the 1st if the other 250 guys we want are all taken.

I started watching his highlights as I have my reasons...I like him a lot. Pro Comp is KB but faster.

Getts last year

The nice thing is he's shown flashes at times of using his size to his advantage..just needs to make that consistent.  His strength is something big to note too...there's one TD he made where the ball was terribly underthrown and he just ripped it out of the CBs hands and ran it in for the score.

"Tends to show monotone, one-note play speed. Hard to find a second gear on tape. Gears down into cuts and slow to accelerate out of breaks."

"lack of vertical talent"

Lack of toughness and inability to block refers to him being a TE. He won't be an inline blocker in the NFL. He's fine as a WR blocking.

Here's another report on him - http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/4/17/8398675/2015-nfl-draft-devin-funchess-breakdown

"I should go ahead and say that Funchess is not going to be a wide receiver on the next level. I know he somehow ran around a 4.5 in the 40 at his pro day and that's great, but on tape he played last season at a speed a lot closer to the 4.7 he ran at the Combine. That 4.7 is a pretty good time for a tight end, but below average for a wide receiver."

"Only problem with that is the fact that Funchess wasn't exactly the most willing blocker in the four games I watched. Sure, he got his guy every now and then, but all too often he would totally whiff on defenders out in space. It was usually a lack of effort to blame on those plays"

"It's not his effort that I'd question, it's whether he is ready for the kind of contact he'll get as a tight end in the NFL. It's one thing to be flexed out wide catching passes and poo, but at some point Funchess is going to have to line up in a three-point stance beside an offensive tackle and block a 280-pound defensive end. It won't be his bread and butter, of course, but if he can't do it at all, then I'm not sure he has a position on any team."

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
