Andrus Peat

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of fans on his bandwagon and I've seen a lot of others dead set against it.

Me? I've been back and forth. Seems like what I read about him, I feel positive. When I watch clips though, I start to feel a little less certain.

So a challenge to fans and foes: Convince me why we should take him or why we should avoid him like the plague.

Some games he looks doofy and lunges alot but after watching alot of film on him I can see he holds his owm against top pass rushers.

I compared him to other films I watched sherff, flowers and humpries.

Peat has looked better then everyone of those guys , he is still raw but he can start day 1 at lt.

I can't get the combine out of my head where he just looked absolutely gassed during drills, which obviously worries me.  But then I read where everyone seems to think he's the most pro-ready OT, would fit our scheme, and has great potential so I'm torn as well.

If he's the pick, I'm excited. But I'll always have an uneasy lingering feeling that his weird ass body won't hold up for some reason. Whether he just continues to get gassed, can't move his lower body enough (the lunges) or whatever.

Andrus Peat has the ability to become one of the best tackles in this year class. He has a lot of the measurable's you look for in a tackle prospect. He is huge guy at 6'7 an 34 3/8" arms weighing 313 pounds with 10 5/8" hands. The frame that Peat is carrying is massive with his huge lower thick half, and the fact he is only 20 years old he will have time in the NFL to add to that frame. A lot of analysts is saying Peat is likely to go top 10 or 15. I think teams will sleep on him and he likely falls. He played good in the PAC 12 and Leonard Williams one of the best DE prospects in this class. Williams said earlier in the week that Peat was the best tackle he faced all year. I am hoping that he falls to the Panthers at 25. That would be a dream scenario for us fans and Gettleman.

I'd suggest you go over to draft breakdown and spend a few minutes watching his tape: http://draftbreakdown.com/players/andrus-peat/

He's probably top 3 OL (Scherff and Collins above him) against the run, he uses his feet well to create the right angles and has the core power to finish off blocks while staying upright.

He has the power to deal with direct rushes easily, but lacks the flexibility and balance to position himself quickly against speed and outside rushes. As a prospect he's got a decent floor but his ceiling depends on whether he can improve his footwork and balance. Suggests to me that he should be available late first round but we shouldn't have any issues with taking him in the first.

I haven't went back and watched his games in awhile, but the big gripe I have with him is how unbalanced he will be at times.  Too often I saw him on the ground.

No prospect is going to be perfect at our pick though, so I'm not sure I would really use that as a legit reason not to take him (I would take him if he was there barring an unexpected fall from another highly regarded prospect).  But that is one of his flaws.

Interesting, because I see your rankings of the top 3 OTs, and I see a ranking that goes

1. Flowers

2. Clemmings

3. Humphries

(Scherff and Collins projecting to G; Peat, according to Corey Chavous of Draft Nasty, is going to be a RT).

This draft is SO wide open.  I think the problem with OT is that the college game is sending us players with a different skill set than 10 years ago.

I would add that my favorite players at OT for us are: (excluding Scherff)

Flowers

Peat

Collins

    • In all honesty, he should probably get that checked out. It might be (Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) "a tuuumaaa"
    • Ah yes, my bad. It's easy to forget those handful of games Frank coached. LOL
    • I've seen the comp a few times, and I feel there is a lot to it. Our situation is a lot like Kansas City was pre-Mahomes (without the HOF HC) Whether you like them or not, D&D are building something here.  They had a strong draft.  The team is slowly coming together, developing some identity, and has some decent blue chip parts.  Brown, Horn, McMillan, and a good OL situation that we should keep fortifying every year.  It's not much yet, but growing.    Bryce is in that Alex Smith spot.  A top draft pick, has never been overly impressive, but you can win games when he's safe with the ball.  You're not winning because of him - maybe once in a blue moon.  From time to time he's shown the ability to orchestrate some plays and lead drives.  I just don't see anything that is like - "oh snap, yeah don't let him go, he's ours".  He'll make a solid/good throw every now and again, but man, it is a struggle a lot of the time to watch.  Some terrible performances to speak of, heck he's already been benched once during year 2.      He should in no way preclude you from flirting with what else is out there.  This is not a marriage.  If you're in position (or trade range) for a guy you REALLY like come draft day, you shoot your shot. If we are in the draft process, and suddenly realize QB3-4 is a guy we really like, that's when you make a modest jump from like 16 to 11 or something like that.  Just like the Bills did for Allen, like the Chiefs did for Mahomes.  This is nothing magical that plants this franchise savior title on them, this is not some stupid trade-- it's an easy trade up to get a guy you like w/a big ceiling.  It's all player dependent and coaching/development driven.  If we don't like a QB, by all means fortify the front-7, get an awesome OLB or ILB prospect.   But we're on year 3, you kind of know what you're getting at this point.  Mostly sub-200 yard performances, low YPA, bad technique, poor mechanics, some decent stuff sprinkled in, but some bad turnover heavy ones that kill the team's momentum.  Again, run with him if there's no complete disaster that happens the remainder of the season, but don't close the door on something better just because of the investment or debatable performances.
