Panthro's 1st Round Prediction (and 2nd and 3rd)

Just judging on the past 2 drafts (that's all we have to go on) DG likes to draft guys who can make an immediate on the field in round 1 (Star and KB). Preston Smith would be used in a rotation and I feel like Gettleman wants more of a every down player in the 1st. Unless Gettleman has already made up his mind on letting CJ go after this season, I see Preston as more of a second round guy.

That's also why I think if we take Shaq he'll be playing some safety for us. For the amount we're in nickel, drafting a weak side linebacker in the first doesn't give us good value imo. I could see Shaq sliding down to WS LB when we're in our 4-3 then go back to SS when we're in our nickel package. He then fits that "blue goose" mold or w/e you want to call it.

It was between Shaq Preston and DJ for me

I went DE

If we take a DL in 1, I think Goldman is a real possibility.  He could supplant D'wan who played like half of d-snaps and is really versatile for a DT.  Another quick prediction: There will be a run on LBs more than any other position.

Collins is the best safety in the draft, if he falls to 25 that is a great value.

Preston Smith is ranked what, 3rd or 4th DE? I think he is this year's Kony Ealy, who Gettledog also had ranked as a first rounder.

Difference is only 15 out of the 32 teams run a 4-3 as their base defense and virtually every team uses a Strong Safety in their base defense.

Of those 15 only a few have a high enough need at DE to take a Preston Smith with their 1st or 2nd pick where the expectation is for the pick to be an immediate impact player.

Preston Smith might have a 1st round grade but he has a much higher drop potential than Collins imo as long as we're projecting Collins to be a SS and not a OLB, which there have been rumors of.

I like this mock... like, A LOT. potentially the best mock I've seen

I've been thinking the UCLA DE in the first for a while, but if he's got jacked up hips, that won't be the pick... especially after the mention of early picks needing to have longevity in DG's presser yesterday

and i'm on the Funchess bandwagon... screw all these guys acting like we need some kind of speed receiver.  we have speed on the roster - i'm pretty sure the panthers will continue to look at Brown as a speed option, Ginn is without a doubt a speed option (even if he was mainly brought in for ST's) and we still have everyone's favorite receiver in Hill on the roster (and at this point, basically all he can do is run fast).  we don't lack speed options, but we lack speedy PLAYMAKERS.  Funchess's speed is deceptive and that big body will do well for Cam.

I never saw anybody complaining about Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery before Cutler poo the bed up in Chicago...

    • For Bryce’s obvious shortcomings (bad pun), there is upside to his game. This isn’t being a homer or apologists, but I like to consider myself fair in criticism.  He’s far tougher than I ever thought he’d be. I really thought homie would have been broken in half by now. I don’t know how he’s not, but he’s not.  He is prone to turning the ball over early in games which digs a huge hole the team is not built to come back from, but dude DOES come up with crucial first down in crucial situations. It’s NEVER pretty, but he just kind of has the shining. He gets bailed out LOTS, and the team still loses games because of him, but he’s a bit of an enigma. He’s a turnover machine that is clutch in big moments.  He’s a smart/elusive cat. He kind of has to be with his limitations. His audibles are almost always correct and he understands coverages. I don’t see him getting fooled too frequently. His turnovers are almost never the ‘damnit Jake/Cam!’ brand we have been accustomed to. They are ALWAYS due to his size/strength limitations.  Strip sacks that shouldn’t be. Picks that happened because he just don’t got that NFL arm. He is still prone to panicking and the wheels can and do fall off at a much higher rate than his peers.  The team is winning on the backs of the defense, running game and special teams… but they’re winning, and unbelievably 1 game behind Tampa. As long as this is happening and Bryce doesn’t go full meltdown, Dave is going to keep him in. He is not getting pulled.
    • This was a terrible podcast. A bunch of uninformed homers that had worse takes than the bottom 10% of the Huddle. I listened to a handful of podcasts this past offseason in search of new Panthers material since John Ellis doesn't do his pod anymore and The 4 Man Rush don't either. Immediately deleted it after the handful I listened to. Truly terrible.
    • The NFC South was so bad it sent a team with a losing record to the Playoffs that year. Wilks had players playing hard at the end but let’s not act like that was a good season. That season hurts even more now that we see in hindsight how good our QB situation was. We just didn’t know it.
