Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott loves pressuring the quarterback and being creative with his schemes. Thompson, a 6-foot-1, 228-pound linebacker/safety/nickel back/running back, provides the opportunity to do that.

Imagine you're under center and see 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly at middle linebacker, 2014 NFL Man of the Year Thomas Davis at one outside linebacker spot and Thompson at the other.

All three are big and fast enough to rush the quarterback. All three are big and fast enough to drop into coverage against a tight end or running back, particularly a tight end such as Seattle's Jimmy Graham.

Shaq Thompson is going to shine quickly with Kuechly, Davis, Star, and KK around him.

So who should we have taken that would have changed that?  Devin Smith?  

 

Again, I think this needs reiterating.  Panthers three top offensive choices were taken before their pick.  Are you advocating for them to reach on a player just to fill a need?

 

The draft isn't over.  We could still end up with Lockett, Strong, Smith, Clemmings, Fisher, etc. in the 2nd round, all guys who could be immediate starters (even if I'm not a huge Smith fan).  Stop panicking, it's not that deep.

I love when people assume that a rookie OT is going to step in and become an all pro.  Yeah...

 

Helping the D will help the O.  If it puts us in a position to run the ball more, that protects Cam.  Gettleman believed that Shaq was the best player there, who will improve our team more than a rookie OT.   I'd rather take a project OT later in the draft and give him a year of seasoning instead of rushing them out just because they were our Round 1 pick.

Two WR's were drafted right after we picked by two GM's who have been more successful at their jobs than Gettleman has.

If we're going by that logic, then Gettleman's last two first round choices were Benjamin and Lotulelei.  So surely this pick would have to be the right move based off that, correct?

Or let me guess... it's different?

 

I liked Dorsett.  Would have been happy if we took him.  But lets stop acting like he was going to be a make or break between a playoff campaign.  The draft isn't over.

      Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.

      I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.

      Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
