Panthers trade up to 9th pick of second round - select Devin Funchess

Funchess was the one guy I didn't want to see picked tonight.. and Gettleman paid too much to move up and get him.

Our next pick isn't until LATE 4th round.. ignoring the OT position again I see

Gettleman legitimately simply does not value the offensive line. Somewhere along the line a mentor of his whispered in his ear that all an OL needs to be good is "time" and I think Gettleman adamantly believes it and the facts aren't going to get in the way of that philosophy

Been following from the UK on cbs , they had him listed as a TE and I couldn't understand the pick but he plays as a WR right? Who is this kid like? Happy if we have given cam another weapon

Think Dwayne Jarretr/Mario Manningham

Can't hate the pick, but I'm surprised by the shock on here at Gettleman for not going Oline. He's from a school of thought that first round OL have to be elite to be drafted and your better served taking skill position or defensive players early in the draft.

Why do you think Eli got beat up so much, they had no oline and really never addressed it via the draft.

Funchess will be a matchup nightmare if used as a hybrid-TE in certain sets, and should take pressure off of Olsen when he's constantly being targeted.

Watching his highlights and hearing the 'knocks' on him, I feel like at best, he could be an Alshon Jeffery type player. Alshon had seperation issues, was slow at the combine, called lazy, everyone here on the Huddle basically wanted no part of him. I wonder if they'd have a different opinion now....

With that said, I don't like to give up the picks, but with 5 picks left in the draft and Gettleman's eye for talent, how can you not feel good about what we're doing here??

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
