Still a litte Confused why we passed over .......

Recommended Posts

I trust the Panthers, I don’t question much but still not understanding why we passed on Jaelen Strong, I mean didn’t he have great production? Wasn’t he the more polished receiver? Isn’t he 6’4 also and ran a 4.4? I have made myself love the Devin Funchess pick, I them wanted to draft a receiver badly. Just wondering why we passed a on a proven player with potential, for a player who hasn’t really produced but has potential. Im just thinking do we think that Funchess is the better player overall, or didwe just not like Strong. Who knows, its the off season , just trying to saty engaged until things start flowing again.

Several reasons came out.

Mainly, his 4.4 time did not match his game film.  Lack of separation was a worry.

The wrist issue and then him blowing off the medical recheck which most teams required, did not sit well with a lot of GM's

I remember specifically the FO saying how Funchess' football smarts blew them away. All things being equal, that may be your reasoning right there. Additionally, DG talked about getting guys who absolutely hate to lose...maybe they didn't see the same passion from other guys as they did Funchess.

they had a first round grade on funchess and a 2nd round grade on strong.

that's why we (and a lot of other teams) passed on strong. the teams actually doing the drafting didn't have him hyped like the draftniks did.

word has been that funchess wouldn't have made it to our 2nd round pick. several teams were really interested in him.

that just wasn't the case with strong. who exactly were the ones saying that he was polished and more proven? probably the same ones saying that funchess had a low football IQ based on zero conversations with the kid.

these draftnik hacks that people keep on quoting and listening to leading up to the draft are barely more knowledgeable than many fans and they all make a lot of pretty illinformed assumptions about what teams are looking for (if they even bother to research them at all) and base their rankings off of essentially a couple highlight videos and usually just parrot each other.

    • Still working on consuming all of these so I don't have summaries available, but I figured there might be another Huddler or three trying to kill time before tonight's final preseason game.   Panthers Blueprint: Training Camp The in-house produced Blueprint series has given behind-the-scenes look on the field and off. Start the day with Robert Hunt's family, be in the morning meetings, mic'd up players during practice (Jaycee, Rozeboom, Icky, and Bryce), roster evaluations by the staff, and plenty of camp highlights capping off with FanFest.   Processing Blue (Mike Kaye & Alex Zietlow Mike and Alex are back talking about a variety of topics including but not limited to: joint practice + preseason game vs. Houston, Trey Hendrickson trade rumors involving Carolina, training camp awards, draft pick draft, and various thoughts about the team.   Jordan & Jake 706: Opening Day Another in-house Panthers' production, the most recent episode of Jordan and Jake talk about how to properly balance intensity in practice, react to the starters being shutdown for the preseason finale, share their thoughts on the newest Panther QB, and more.   Raw Room - Ep 278 - Gas Pedal (ft. Mike Davis) Assistant special teams' coach Darren Bates' Raw Room podcast has former Panthers' RB Mike Davis on his weekly podcast. I'm about halfway through this one and it's been a lot of fun. The Raw Room guys (DB, his friend Alex Sweets, former Eagles/Chargers OT King Dunlap, and former Atlanta DB Jalen Collins) are hilarious and Mike fits right in. They talk about his football experience coming up, decommitting from Florida and how he decided on South Carolina, and more. Warning: If you're the type of person that is easily distracted by accents, despite XL being on the team, you might have issues with understanding the Memphis dialect. If you don't care about how somebody talks, just what they're talking about, tune in!
    • Allen was borderline unplayable in College.  He's an absolute unicorn in terms of his career panning out the way it has.
    • It's a step up in competition as well. The gap in athletic skill is narrowed from what was faced at the college level.
