WFNZ's primetime w/kris Kroeger sucks

Syphilis made van Gogh cut off his ear and Jeremy cut off his wang.  Or at least that's what he says when he points it out on the mantel in his living room.

I don't listen to the radio, I think it's just a fad like interneting and wearing a seatbelt.  But if I did, what sort of pop culture stuff are we talking about?  Star Wars or Ariana Grande's newest dude?

This is an interesting thought. I think there are a lot of various reasons. This could be one. The fact that he doesn't look like any other QB we've ever seen is another. He's not Andrew Luck, so some folks dislike him for something he can't control there. I also think QB is the position more than any other that fans are rarely satisfied with what they have - even when what they have is pretty good. Everyone wants a hall of fame QB, but having a QB that's one of the best of his generation (I'm talking Luck, Wilson, RGIII, Dalton, Kaep, Tannehill, Bridgewater, Carr, Winston, Mariota and the tons of others that have already fizzled out) is pretty good by itself.

I think you're close.

To me, the place most people get it wrong with Newton is in the comparisons they make regarding him as a passer.

He's not Michael Vick. In fact, he's nothing like Vick. If you want a Vick clone, I'll give you two hints where to find one. He's in a city where they're fighting over the team nickname and he's not Kirk Cousins.

I'm not a fan of the Roethlisberger comparison either. A smaller version of Big Ben can be found in Seattle though. They both do their best work when they're running for their lives.

Kaepernick? Call me in a year or two when he learns how to get to his second read.

Does Cam suffer when compared to the Rogers/Manning/Brady/Brees type?  Sure, but who doesn't? Everyone knows they're pinpoint accurate passers - something Newton will probably never be - but what they don't get is that those guys are also better suited to West Coast or Earhardt-Perkins systems, not a Coryell like the Panthers run.

So who should Cam make you think of?

Well, he's an athletic guy, and super competitive; confident (sometimes overconfident) in his abilities;  he throws a hard, flatline pass; he's capable of being laser perfect one play and wildly off the mark the next; and he wears a low, single digit number.

Remind you of anybody?

Brett Favre was far from a perfect passer. Like Newton, he could inspire cheers of "how" and cries of "why" all within the same game. And while pinpoint accurate at times, Favre was as often as not more of a 'general vicinity' guy. Knowing this, the Packers picked their receivers accordingly.

You might also remember that despite being something other than a prototypical passer, Favre won a Super Bowl ring and a few league MVP titles.

Was Favre the run threat Newton is? No, but we're talking about him as a passer, not a runner.

Frankly, I dont see  how anyone can watch Newton pass and not see echos of old Number Four.

I've said this before too, but I really appreciate the fact that Kroeger is homegrown.  I love having a host that supports all the local pro teams (including the Canes, even if they don't get a ton of air time).

Also, the fact that Kroeger is trying to mix things up and have intelligent conversation is a complete breath of fresh air after his predecessor.  I swear, I felt dumber each time I heard James on the radio.  I still tried to listen because I'm basically a WFNZ lifer and I wanted to hear local sports talk, but it was a chore a lot of the time.  Even when Zarzour was on there to help balance him out, it wasn't enough to overcome the overall level of idiocy.

I could probably do without the Whiner Line too, although it can be comedic gold every now and then.  I think it would be a bigger hit if it weren't an everyday occurrence and were more of a novelty, but then you may miss out on the few times when it would be worthwhile.

Finally, if I did have a (constructive) criticism of Kroeger, it would be that he sometimes plays the contrarian card a little too much.  A couple of days ago he was ragging on people for suddenly caring so much about Sepp Blatter and the FIFA fiasco, and then today he was getting on people for suddenly caring about college baseball and NC State's meltdown in the tourney.  I certainly understand where he's coming from and totally get what he's saying, but when you start to do that too much, it sometimes has a tendency to sound preachy.  But, hey, it's his show, and he has a right to get on a soapbox when he feels the urge.  I just hope he doesn't overdo it.

Overall, though, I've really enjoyed having intelligent conversation back on the air.

    • Why do you say that. What leads you to think that we, as supporters, think his ceiling is 10-12. That's a ridiculous assumption on your part. The Seahawks won the SB with Darnold passing for 25 TD's, 14 Ints with a 99.1 rating for the season.  The Panthers with Young were at 23 TD's, 11 Ints and a 78.8 rating for the season. Not that far off. The problem with all the Young discourse around here is the assumption that the QB is the sole determining factor for a teams success. That just isn't true and it's certainly not how Morgan and Tilis are building the Panthers.
    • Do we pay based on how many wins or how many games Bryce led us to wins? We've spent quite a bit on defense this year and hopefully they're much improved. If the Panthers do get to 10 wins, but Bryce has another year like last year where he showed up big in a couple, was present in a few, and forgettable in most, do we still pay him 50m per year?  I keep bringing it up because I think it's relevant, but Bryce was outplayed by a 6m per year backup last year. I don't see how it's possible to pay a top tier QB contract to someone who's putting up backup QB production.
    • I understand tempering expectations, but there are some issues with his points. Walker was a 3 year starter, but Green Bay let him walk and no other team was quick to snatch him up. That says something. Freeling will compete to start. With Hunter, we rotate our linemen and even 5th round pick Cam Jackson played some meaningful snaps last year. Both Brown III and Wharton have underwhelmed since we picked them up. Hunter is a run plugger that we have needed. Hunter will play early, even if he isn't the "starter." Brazzell was described as one of Canales' favorite prospects in the draft and he has a speed element we have been missing. I think Canales is going to have plays drawn up with Brazzell on the field just out of pure excitement. It will be up to Brazzell to prove he can handle it, though. If he can, he will play. As far as our secondary picks, yeah they have to earn their stripes and Evero tends to lean on veterans. So they might take time, but if they can show they can play, they will see the field. Smith-Wade and Ransom did. Sam Hecht simply has to show he can handle the mental side of the NFL game. If he can, he is in a direct competition with Fortner, who's also relatively young, but also on his 3rd NFL team and doesn't have the power profile of Hecht.  I can appreciate that Gantt wants to pour cold water on what was perceived as an impactful draft, but facts are facts.
