A Saints fan's "Scouting Report" re: Panthers

An interesting preview of the Saints - Panthers match up in Week 3 at Canal Street Chronicles:

http://www.canalstreetchronicles.com/2015/7/30/9038991/scouting-the-saints-2015-opponents-week-3-vs-carolina-panthers

It's not all that long or detailed, but one paragraph jumped off the page.

Wow, a lot of RESPECT for & FEAR of Shaq from our rivals before he's even played a snap.  SWEET.

Shaq Thompson: I almost put Thomas Davis here, or Bene Benwikere, the 2nd year CB out of San Jose State who graded PFF's #18 CB his rookie season, but the potential for Shaq Thompson to be an immediate impact WLB together with a fierce combo in Kuechly and Davis was too much to overlook. He projects as a sideline-to-sideline LB in the mold of guys like Lavonte David and DeAndre Levy and if he plays at a fraction of his potential this season, he would be a valuable addition to the Panthers defense.

Looking at their roster...geez.  They could finish behind the Bucs this year.  I don't understand how people still somehow think they have a shot at the division.  That team has like nothing.

I certainly don't know how anyone outside of unknowledgeable national jacks could pick them to be division champs, but as long as they have Brees, they got a shot. As much as I hate mole face (and seriously if you had $100M + would you not remove that turd stain on your face?), he is a first ballot hall of famer and he still can pick us apart if we can't get pressure like we have the last few years. The Panthers were competitive and had a chance to win most games in '11 and '12 when we had Cam and not much else on offense. It's certainly hard to see them as a team that could make any noise deep in the playoffs let alone the division, but there not going to be an easy win either

Honest eval:

It'll be tougher for our offense to score on them than last year, but easier for our defense to shut them down.

Adding 6'4" CB Browner will help them defend our WRs. Rookie ILB Stephone Anthony will help their run defense, but could hinder their pass defense. Cutting NT Brodrick Bunkley puts the pressure on 3rd year NT John Jenkins, who has missed nearly half as many games as he's started (4 missed vs. 9 started). Cutting a proven sacker in Junior Gallette and hoping to replace his production with rookie LB Kikaha is unrealistic until Kikaha gets a few NFL years experience.

We've added Peanut Tillman and to bolster the weak link in our defense while they've traded 2 of Breesus' favorite targets and didn't replace them. Their upgrades to their O-Line and RBs play to the strength of our defense, the front 7.

Reluctantly agree... Any top tier QB can move the ball on us if the front four don't pressure him. That's how the defense we run works. Dink and dunk can move the ball on a zone D and Brees is good at that. Having said that the Saints aren't very good looking at their roster.

Disagree.  Cam will be healthy and our line will be better.  Their front 7 is an absolute joke.  Rookie reach Stephone Anthony "will" help their D?  Just like SJB and Khairi Fortt "will" help their D?

Nothing funny about DE Cam Jordan. He's no joke, especially going against what is our weakest spot on offense, our OTs. And yes, ILB Anthony WILL help their run defense. He's playing INSIDE where his speed deficiency is minimized in their 3-4 defense. That's why I stated he'll help their RUN defense, but could hinder their PASS defense.

I hate the Taints, but I'm not naïve enough to believe that flower on their helmet makes all of them dumb pussies.

Cam Jordan was a huge letdown for them last year when he wasn't playing a French Canadian in his first game in the United States.  Even many of their own fans thought his new deal reeked of desperation and blind hope.  Our own Cam (Jerry) literally made their Cam look like Tom from the old cartoon Tom and Jerry in their house last year.

    • Yeah but at least that QB would be not short.  I keep going back to the fact other than Wilson no other short QB has ever won a Super Bowl. The success rate of short QBs is very, very low. Like count on one hand low.  Yeah some people would include Brees too but I don’t consider a 6 foot tall QB short, imo.
    • I just rewatched all the highlights from after Bryce being benched. The Bryce hate needs to calm down a little bit. He showed a ton of potential the back half of the year. Same with Legette. They both made great plays when it mattered and a few mistakes when it counted. If we didn’t have a historically awful defense last year we could have ended even a bit better. Going into a brand new season we should be optimistic at least before game one. 2015 no one expected to go anywhere and the team steam rolled the league. I’m not saying that will happen, but hopefully we made strides to improve on the end of last year. Bryce put both Super Bowl teams in a battle last year and if we had a better D we could have taken them both. So at least look forward to the season and not past the season until it at least begins.
    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
