Ryan Broyles Released by Lions

Ryan Broyles, a former 2012 second round pick, was just released by the Detroit Lions. He has had two ACL injuries and a torn Achilles. He is reported to have asked for his own release following a preseason in which he was not highly targeted.

I say we give him a look. This guy was brimming with talent and it doesn't hurt. People may say these injuries sapped him of his ability to separate, but who really knows. I'm looking at a guy with three years of experience and as someone who asked for his own release because he knows what he is capable of. He wants to be in an environment where he can fight for targets. Carolina is definitely a place he can do that.

I don't see how signing a broken down receiver is going to help us.  We do this every year - every time someone gets cut who plays a position where we're struggling people start talking about signing them...full speed ahead damn the man sign ALL the [insert position here].

To me this is the kind of move you make if you already have solid receivers and you want to see if you can add a weapon on the cheap (thus can absorb the hit if he ends up hurt or is simply terrible now).  It's the exact opposite of the kind of move you make if your receiver group is already weak and you're looking for someone to consistently contribute.  The team with an already weak receiver group has a much smaller margin for error and thus "it can't hurt" quickly becomes "not only can it hurt but it can be a total disaster".

Roster spots aren't unlimited - there's a cost in at the very least someone else who could be in that spot for every "it can't hurt" guy that lands here.

We are in preseason. We have a few extra spots. We cut someone we know we aren't going to keep anyways, and bring him in for a week. See how he does. It's not like he gets guaranteed money.

And I disagree. When your receiver group is weak, you don't sit on your hands. You look and seek out ways to fix your problems. Not every input is going to be a solution, but if you don't at least try, it will never get better.

I'm not advocating doing nothing so I don't get that angle.

I am advocating not signing every WR off the scrap heap because maybe they're secretly bionic.  I am specifically advocating not signing *this* receiver off the scrap heap because *before* his leg problems he was an undersized receiver with average speed who had trouble in the following areas according to the scouting reports Google told me I should read: securing catches in space / when a CB presses him and he has to break away and get back into his route.

He just wasn't all that good BEFORE he was constantly hurt.

I WOULD like to add a receiver if one becomes available who might be at the end of a career who has shown consistency and reliability which we need.  I would also not be opposed to a trade for a known quantity higher quality receiver (yes picks - I know player for player trades are unheard of outside Madden).  I would not like to add a receiver who has potential but is average at best and has no NFL body of work to speak of.  Now is not the time to take a flier on every available body - we HAVE available bodies we can take a flier on who are pretty much in this guy's strata.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
