Panthers PFF Grades - Defense

KK Short leads the defensive rankings, which reflects what we all saw on the field. Kurt Coleman also had a good game including deflecting the final pass to end the game.

Looking at the bottom of the grades, notice they are all the oldest players on the defense.... in fact, you could pretty much split this chart in half , top to bottom, with younger players up top and older players below.

Older guys + high heat index + longest non-OT game = lowered scores

Lessons learned : CJ missing the preseason cost him time getting into football shape since he cramped up at the end, no Star in the rotation equaled more snaps in the heat for the other D-Linemen, and TD is great outside but those couple snaps in the middle hurt his grade. Younger guys held up better to the heat index I heard on Panthers radio at one point was 118 on the sideline and Coleman is showing his experience playing in McDermott's system from when they were in Philadelphia

TD had a stupid penalty that he knew better on.  He has some whiffs as well, it wasn't his best game definitely.   Tillman having that bad of a ratings against a team like that is disheartening.  But, it's nice to see Coleman up there.  I remember seeing Harper burned a few times, guy is just old, it's going to happen.

The worst thing about that is CJ, getting no pressure against a depleted line.   We cannot pay this guy like a top-10 DE anymore.  I would rather use that money on Norman.  I've felt CJ was losing a step for a couple years.  Injuries and age are just piling up I believe.  I hope he takes a team friendly deal, but I'm sure some other team would overpay.

I admit I don't really know the ins & outs of how PFF grades work, especially for the defense.  How signifcant a factor is TD's late hit penalty in his overall low score?

In any case, the D played well.

  • Houston only had two big plays in the entire game.  (They capitalized and scored on both drives with the big plays).
  • At one point in the first half we forced Houston to turn the ball over on downs and then punt the next 5 drives.
  • I'd love to see the PFF scores broken down by half.  We did a pretty good job of keeping Houston out of Carolina territory in the first half.  The second half Houston obviously made some adjustments, settled down and began to move the ball better.  The heat could have been a factor wearing down both Ds.   We too moved the ball pretty well in the 2nd half...

You can see my "game at a glance" tables illustrating all the drives of the game for both teams here:
