Texans Blog Praises Panthers

Teams operate in a state of either contending, rebuilding, or being stuck in the middle of the two in a wandering aimless daze known as mediocrity. If this was organized into one of the charts we are taught in grade school, it would be three lists, with teams snuggled neatly below these headers. Rarely do these things intermingle, but the Carolina Panthers are one of the rare teams who are better suited for a Venn Diagram than a table. They are the only team in the league I can name that has been able to contend while they rebuild and have had to rebuild as they contend.

Our 'keep pounding' phrase applies to team building too (and the perception of the organization). Make good decisions for both the short term and long term, with emphasis on the long term to avoid an excessive rebuild mode, and the Panthers really become one of the few teams that don't have to fall apart and be pushovers before they can contend for the SB again.

Seriously though, how fuging amazing is DG? 2 years in the 2nd round of the playoffs while rebuilding and with one of the worst cap situations in the league. Already off to a 3-0 start in his 3rd year as well despite many key players being injured. Unbelievable the depth and core he has built here in just 2 years (though we do have to thank Hurney for Cam, Luke, TD, Greg and Josh).

It's pretty spot on. We have veteran leadership dating back to 2007 and have really became relevant in 2011 with Cam. Thanks to Gettleman's approach the draft, ideology of not overpaying players, and Ron's ability to coach we've been able to compete at a high level.

Lets look at an organization that is on the opposite spectrum - the Aints. They have older players who are past their prime, overpaid, and have Heath issues (Colston, Brees, Byrd respectively). There's no cohesion within the organization that leave players bitter  (Graham, Gallette, Sproles).

Drayton Florence and Captain Munnerlyn were the other CBs in 2013 and not Josh Thomas, but I'm nit-picking.  Overall a well-researched and objective article, the likes of which aren't often seen about the Panthers outside of the Carolinas (and not always within them either).  Great find.

Yep, and agree with that last line.  Despite putting the Panthers in cap hell, dumb contracts, etc ... Hurney did also give us some of our core, Especially drafting Cam!!  So nice to finally have a franchise quarterback.

The article is great, thanks for posting.  But after reading it I, I...I can't believe I'm going to say this.  Shula is doing good?

""Talentless" is an unfair adjective to describe the Panthers' offensive line. Oher has rebounded nicely, Turner is a third round pick who can maul in the run game, Kalil is a second round pick and one of the best centers in the game, and Norwell, and Remmers have been adequate despite how they got into the league. Every one of them has issues in pass protection, and as a whole they lack execution. "Below average" Is a completely fair assessment. Yet it's okay because of the scheme they run and the talent that carries the ball behind them."

Anybody that thinks Norwell is merely adequate has not watched him play. Remmers is actually pretty solid for that matter. I couldn't give a rat's ass how they got into the league.

Right now our pass protection is well above average and our run blocking is below average. Overall, our line is around league average. That's a hell of an improvement since last year.

    • I think you have to factor in that we're still not an attractive proposition for Head Coaches. You're not getting the cream of the crop if you fire Canales a year after winning the NFC South, especially considering the situation he walked into.
    • Yeah, I was about to say I hope he's doing okay health-wise because he's not looking good in that pic.
    • Honestly, I dont  think he should be on the hot seat yet. A bad start to next year, then yes. Despite our mistakes on play calling this past season, we played better than anticipated overall. Bryce showed improvement and maturity (although still not nowhere close to our expectations). Better record and 2-15 to 5-12 to 8-9. Despite what we feel the stats dont lie we are improving by 3 wins a year. Could 11-6 be our expectation. That's a high bar but at the rate we are going, thats what its looking like. We all want to see a 5-12 to a 13-4 record but we are methodically moving up. Success doesnt happen overnight (well in most cases).  IMO we are struggling mostly on the defensive end. LB and edge are our biggest weakness. I see Bryce making improvements (even though I was a Bryce hater) next year. Biggest concern is LT on offense. How to fix this? We need a big name edge or to trade up and get a big name edge or LB and pick up one in FA and draft one. Also if in the 3rd we can pick up a TE. Dont know if Sanders is the answer or Tremble (even though I love Trembles blocking and power after the catch). If these two can get their footwork together they would be great. Maybe all they need is a better TE coach. And if Brooks can stay healthy and be the back we thought he could be, man that would be great
