Ryan Delaire 2013 Towson highlights

I think Gettleman may have found a diamond in the rough here.  You don't want to get carried away from one game, but there is a lot to like with this guy.

But a few things stand out about the guy.  He has a high motor, he has exceptional closing speed, and he plays with bad intentions.

He is also a guy that possibly could help tremendously next Sunday against the read option that Seattle runs so well.  He has the athetic ability to play disciplined and cover both the RB and QB.  Something Jared Allen cannot do at this stage of his career.

I usually try not to get caught up in the hype, but this guy could be a good one.

Here is his highlights from 2013 at Towson.  You can chalk alot of it to his low level of competition, but what you can't ignore in these highlights is his speed once he gets off his blocker.  If these videos have already been posted then my apologies.

And here is a video breaking down his game before the draft

I just watched the first 2 minutes of the first video.  It's encouraging, through those 2 minutes, that I saw multiple techniques.  He used a rip, swim, bull rush, spin, and speed rush.  He has the athleticism as well, so this kid may be on his way to a solid career.  With some bulk and refinement, he could be a monster.

His build is more in line with a 3rd down specialist. Kind of like Aldon Smith. So I'm guessing he's going to be suspect in the run game this year. Maybe our linebackers can mask that a bit because we desperately need a pass rush.

The swim move he put on that right tackle was beautiful. He can most definitely rush the passer.

Yeah he might be a little suspect in a traditional power running game where a guy like Wes Horton may be better suited in early down and run situations

But I do think he could be a big help in the run game against teams like Seattle which like to run some read option.

IMO he has the athletic ability to play both RB and QB effectively.  Not sure we have had anyone else that can do that since Greg Hardy left

I cant wait to see more of him.  And if he adds weight but keeps his explosiveness he could be a 3 down DE in a year or two.

He does remind me of hardy. It seems that he has a spin move, a bull rush, and of course a speed rush to go with a high motor. He seemed to show discipline against the run. Maybe the biggest thing I noticed was that in the 4th quarter, the bucs started to double team him. If he consistently demands a double team, that'll open up things for kony and kk.

    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
