We heard it from every other fanbase jealous of our young hungry elite D for three years. "Just you wait, when those players start getting paid, you're going to have problems. The desire will wane, players will get content."

Not us! we said, this D is different. This D is one of the greatest of all time!

Well...................they're right. It's now official. Our D is soft. I do not see the same crazy pack of wild dog energy and hunger out of our core players. There are some exceptions, mainly on the D line. I still see energy from guys like Bennett and Avril.

But the LOB? Nope, soft as hell, especially Sherman. $$$ and babies have made him soft. Earl? Looks confused half the time. Kam? Still hits hard, but got TORCHED yesterday. Bobby? KJ? OK, but not playing anywhere near their 2012/2103 form.

While I do agree this defense is not what it once was, let's not forget they were amazing the last 2 games (Chi/Det), and then for 3 quarters yesterday on the road against one of the best offenses in the NFL. Once again the offense hung the defense out to dry yesterday with zero production in the 4th quarter and OT.

Unfortunately after going to back to back Super Bowls and most of these guys getting paid, they probably will never be as dominant and frenzied as they were when they were trying to climb the mountain. Hope I'm wrong.

on Wilson:

We are stating to really see his limitations. The middle of the field appears to be all but inaccessible to him in the short passing game. He just cant see I guess

and

I know there is a lot of hate for Russ on this board. With this said I truly believe Russ has been overwhelmed with the lack of consistent support on the OL. When he first came up I'm sure he had a lot more confidence in the OL. Now from one snap to the next he just doesn't have any consistent protection and thus he has somewhat regressed as a passer as the gameplan as drawn up is thrown out the window. With the losses the OL has sustained it's understandable but starting this offseason they really need to stop with the projects and find good (great not needed) lineman that have SOME experience especially at the NFL level playing the position. Once Russ gets comfortable that he'll have consistent protection again he will again ascend to the top of the heap of QB's. Until then expect some of the same.

For all of the chaotic ballet happening on a NFL field, consistent winning really does boil down to the trenches.  The toughest things to build and sustain in the NFL are above average OL/DL.  Teams may be able to scheme or mask deficiencies with superior talent at other positions but it isn't a recipe for sustained success..... unless you have Aaron Rodgers, that dude's ability to mask a shoddy OL is unreal.

This year Cam has gotten the best protection of his career and he's a legit MVP candidate.

Wilson has been sacked 22 times through 5 games so far.

Maybe trading away their best offensive lineman for a TE who doesn't block wasn't such a hot idea.

the jury is till out on our OL this year, but after watching the transformation last year, I understand more how talent is important, but keeping personnel intact is just as.  The OL operates as a unit, and having the same guys in place every game does wonders.

For whatever reason, Cam has some of his poorest games against Seattle so while our defense has played them close the offense really has given the games away like with the pick six in the playoffs and and Cam dribbling the ball at his feet when he had a wide open receiver 8 yards away in the endzone for the win.  I hope Cam has a fantastic game and we score 31 on them this time.  That will go far to make Cam and the Panthers legitimate plus it makes us 5-0 and gives us a win in a game most felt we would lose at the beginning of the season.

    • To be fair, I kind of like Bo but he was BAD this past weekend.
    • What I noticed was Tmac running free on deep routes a lot. Can we just get PJ or Hooker to throw go routes on every play for the rest of the season? It would be more exiting than this current mess.
    • We're all aware of the frustrating Week 1 for Carolina, but there's reasons to see Arizona as a possible get-right game. While this will be Zona's home opener (requiring the team to travel out west), they were barely able to hold on to a lead against the hapless Saints who got a chance to tie the game up with 2min left that ended at the ARI 18. Kyler Murray was 21/29 with 2 passing TDs but for only 163yds (5.6yd AVG) and a QBR of 50.9 (RTG 108.8). He was also sacked five times for 33yds. Meanwhile, Spencer Rattler went 27/46 and was sacked just once for 6yds. Kyler also carried the ball seven times for 38yds. James Conner struggled to get going (12 carries, 39yds) but Trey Benson had a good day thanks to a 52yd scamper (8 carries, 69yds). Arizona has weapons in MHJ and McBride, but the CBs have been playing well enough for McBride to be the true focus of the defense. MHJ had a good game though against the Saints, so hopefully Jaycee + Mike Jackson can disrupt that connection. The Cardinals also aren't a disciplined team... with an opportunity to put the Saints away they gave up a TFL and a holding penalty before having the field goal attempt blocked. Their OL suuuuucks at run blocking and got better pass blocking from their TEs in week 1 than they did from any OL except for Paris Johnson Jr. Isaiah Adams and Hjalte Froholdt especially had issues as did Jonah Williams. If the Panthers' revamped DL can't get pressure against them it might be worth giving the alarm a pull.
