Is star regressing or are injuries to blame?

I think it's the injuries. He was honestly pretty terrible at the start of the year to the point where Kyle Love was by far the better option at NT, but he's really picked it up the last 4-5 games where he's looking like he did his first two years. Once he got a solid month in I think he was in much better shape. Missing all that time prior to the regular season set him back.

correct me if i am wrong, but our run D hasn't been that great this season.

what do you guys think is the difference this year and in the past.

It hasn't been great this year, although I think that when we have focused on stopping the run, we have.

It was dramatically worse last year, at least until the last 5 games or so.

Star is quite possibly the most important piece to our D.

He keeps Luke, TD and Co clean from guards.

He makes sure KK sees no double teams, as well as the Ends.

Nobody talks about it but CJ is the missing piece to our run D.

he diagnoses plays so well it can't be overstated.  We need him back.

I actually disagree. Our run D might not look great on paper, but most of the runs I remember going for good yardage didn't go between the guards. They are usually bounced outside if memory serves me. A lot of time out LB's get picked on the outside runs. The few times they have gone up middle I can recall they were basically stuffed at the line and the shimmied out of it and broke a decent gain outside. But then I watch games in a fog of IPA's and habanero wings so I'm not the best person to write the history of Panthers football.

Yeah if I remember correctly, he was getting most of the praise between he and Short in 2013 and 2014. This is the first year Short has been talked about more often. There's alot of reasons for this, but I don't think our starting DTs are where the concern lies. I think it lies with the backups. Dwan and Colin Cole aren't getting any younger. I'm impressed by Love, but I won't complain if Gman finds some fresh DT blood in this coming draft.

Based on what I have seen and what I know about being a DT, Star is doing what he is suppose to be doing as a NT. His primary job is to:

1. Command a Double Team(He Does That)

2. Keep Lineman off of the LBer's(He Does That)

3. Make some plays in the backfield (He Does That)

4. Free up the other D-Lineman to be 1 on 1 (He does that)

He is not flashy, but he always puts on his hard hat, construction boots, clocks in ready to work.

Our Run Defense is not bad, Because our linebackers play sideline to sideline, we are vulnerable to cut-backs and thats what has killed us.

Those of you saying that Star keeps double teams off KK are wrong, I'm sorry. KK has consistently faced double teams all year.

Star is a good player. KK is a difference maker. Given the choice of only keeping one on a 2nd contract, KK is to me a no brainer choice.

Just FYI, we cut Colin Cole earlier in the season.  May have been when we picked up Delaire.  I forget.

I know what his job is and that he is not a pass rusher. But it can be argued he applied much more pressure and was a dominate for against run where he was routinely seen making tackles for a loss.

This year I would say he has been average. Not sticking out either way.

Everyone is more dominant when they first hit the scene. I take you back to our Pre-season game against the Miami Dolphins.

Donkey Kong Suh ain't do poo that game, and even against JJ Watt he did not show up like he normally does,  and there has been other games like that as well. Do you blame that on regression, or studying film of your opponent and trying to execute the gameplan? I never said Short never gets double teamed, that is how Star gets sacks

    • He's not wrong though. You talk like a politician on here. Leaving yourself just enough wiggle room to say you never fully counted Bryce out if you need to....But we can all see it. Just say you think he is a bust outright and you will have to type a lot less. Obfuscating your opinion behind QB3 competitions etc....
    • Most EVs are in the 90+ e-MPG meaning some measurement house somewhere compares the EV to a similar ICE model and works out how much is costs to charge (on average) versus fill up as a point of comparison. Talking long term, in the hundreds of thousands of miles?  No clue.  Some early signs are that EV batteries maintain 80% charge over 400k miles.  So there's that.   The challenge and charm of an ICE vehicle is being able to park it under a tree, get your jack stands out and tinker with your engine.  There's just not that same level of complexity in an EV.  I saw someone estimate there are 200 or so moving parts in an EV, and 2000 in an ICE vehicle.  I'm not a part counter so I can't really speak to that. I think that the EV is more the future than any type of combustion engine.  Those will still be around in specific purposes, but for most people - an EV will be the superior option in terms of efficiency.  I say that as someone who loves stupid horsepower numbers out of turbo 4 bangers and inline 6s...  I am one of those tinkers when I can be. A bigger issue for EVs is going to be the ownership versus lease.  Right now, there are INSANE leases on EVs, which is great, but what do you have at the end of that lease?  Nada, maybe some equity if you're lucky.  Where as I'm almost done paying for my car, and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off (or my son wrecks it when he starts to drive).  Will EV makers do the smartphone thing and build in planned obsolesce?  Stop updating software?  I love the tech in EVs, and I think getting more cars and trucks off the road is a good thing.  But I am still just a little concerned.  Capitalism has gotten far too extractive.
