David Newton: Rivera will not rest starters

Mr. Scot

I think as we get closer we ought to approach playing time like a 3rd pre-season game if/when we get a comfortable lead. We can keep the chemistry and rhythm, while adding rest a reducing the potential for injury.  It just seems more times than not the teams who rest starters at the end of the season get burned by it.

I don't think we should rest starters but like people are talking about the backups at RB I think we should get more reps into the backups across the team. Get them real game time experience when the consequences for failure aren't as costly as normal.

As well as the RBs, Klein at MLB, Shaq in for TD in on some two LB packages, the younger DEs. (not all at the same time obviously).

This has just underscored for me how young we are playing across the board... The future looks GOOD if we can hold on to our core players through contract negotiations!

Agreed with not resting players unless they need it (injuries).  There's a lot to be said about momentum, continuity, and chemistry.  Those are intangibles that can be fuged up if you take the foot off the gas.  Now if we're up big going into the 4th quarter I don't see any reason not to sit some players, but they should be playing every week IMO.

All signs point to Carolina completing a 16-0 regular season

Agree or disagree?

(and do you trust the source?)

First: This sucker is prime poll material.

2: Don't really trust the source.

C: He has plenty of time to change his mind.

Fourth: Completely disagree, but only if the #1 seed is eventually locked up. Still haven't clinched a playoff berth yet, so might be a few weeks before a potential 1-seed lockup. However, if week 16 and 17 could be played preseason style, with the starters only playing a quarter or a half, I'm all for sitting fools. If someone important got hurt in the 3rd quarter of a meaningless Bucs game, I'd lose it.

The whole "they'll lose their edge" argument is a conspiracy, perpetrated by the networks to prevent teams from fielding backups in week 17. I'm pretty sure that they are also behind the social expectation of diamond engagement rings, constipation, and your single missing sock from the dryer.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
