Be Honest, How Many of You Were Cam Fans When He Was At Auburn?

I was iffy as I have very minimal interest in college ball.  My father is a rabid fan.  One day during the holidays I was asking about who was good and whatnot, he mentioned Auburn being undefeated.  I asked him how the heck that happened as Auburn was pegged pretty low in the BCS rankings before the season started.  He told me they had a quarterback who was like Vince Young, but was probably a bit better than him.

Fast forward to draft I still had the comparison in my head to Vince Young.  Other draftniks had that comparison.  I had felt VY COULD have had success in the NFL, but a serious of circumstances really stunted his ability.  People started saying the Panthers would probably take Cam anyway, so it was homework time to see for myself his game.

After a couple of youtube highlight videos (obviously the best method of scouting players lol), I could quickly tell he was not Vince Young.  No weird side arm mechanics and some semblance of a presence in the pocket.  I quickly began figuring he could scoot around as sort of a poor-man's Big Ben/Mike Vick hybrid.  All the running ability in the world, but could likely use it to consistently extend plays until coverage broke or a running lane opened.

I felt he'd become a stud player, but thought he'd struggle mightily in his first few years if forced into running a pro style offense.  Certainly did not expect the success to come so soon.

Never follow college football much, so I did not know much about him other than he won two different national championships and stole a laptop (like, who hasn't, am I right?).

To be factual, he purchased a stolen laptop.

Still a crime? Yes.  But not the same as burglary or theft.

I was.

I was born and raised in NC, and have lived here my whole life.  So when the Panthers came to fruition they were immediately my NFL team and was always a UNC fan.

But my father graduated from Auburn and so growing up I watched a lot of Auburn football and have always rooted for them, so I saw a lot of Cam Newton that year, and thought he was a unique specimen and thought his game actually would translate to the NFL because their wasnt many (if any) past QBs to compare him too.

Well, it has always been obvious that you got your smarts from somewhere.  Now we know. :P

And as for Cam, even before the draft I had near perfect confidence that he was going to be great in the NFL, because that kid was the best damn FOOTBALL player that I had ever seen (and being a season ticket holder at Auburn since 1985 (and a student since 1980 before that), I've seen a lot of damn good football players on the home and visitors sideline).

The thing is alot of people was iffy cause they didnt know Cam. He really came out of nowhere because he didnt get hardly no PT at florida behind The Golden Calf of Bristol. Then the laptop incident and then Blinn college and nobody hears anything from there. Then all a sudden boom Auburn goes undefeated behind Cam. If you look at the trend the guy worked his tail off to get back to competing on a high level and ran away with it. I was happy we drafted him first because anybody that can fight through adversity in their young adult college career and come back to win a BCS Championship and go undefeated at that has the heart of a champion. Yea his mechanics werent all that there but the guy had tremendous upside which we see now. I knew it would happen it was only a matter of time.

I definitely wanted old neckbeard at the time but i was in agreement that cam was the right pick when we took him as i didnt like the other qbs and we desperately needed a qb.

Honestly, when he was at auburn, i thought he was fun to watch but i was sort of ambivalent towards him and auburn.  I just wanted sportscenter to talk about anything else than the negative cam stories.

I myself was pulling for Luck, but was intrigued by Cam Newton.  I honestly felt about as good about a consolation prize as you could.

When he was at Auburn I remember all of his cut back scrambles while Auburn was pulling out the tough SEC matchups and I watched the Natty, but I never thought he would be this good.  To be honest when he started his first game at Arizona I was expecting a stat line similar to his preseason games, 150 with a TD.

How did everyone else feel about Cam BEFORE he became our guy?

I always liked Cam. I'm so glad he went to AU instead of Oklahoma and Miss State. I went to the AU/ARK game in 2010. Cam vs. Mallet.

I was in the minority that wanted Cam over Luck if Luck came out. I loved Cam at Auburn and the more and more we lost the happier I got because it meant we had a better shot at Cam. Regardless of where Cam went I would be a huge fan of him and would still have been my favorite NFL player. I'm so lucky I got my favorite player on my favorite team

If you have ever watched Cam play, you knew he was the best player on the field.

The ONLY drawback I had with him was his inexperience. I still would have taken him. I just would have thought it would take a couple of years for him to "Get it". The thing is/was. He was a fuging blast watching as he learned to "Get it". Now that has gotten it, he is a damm beast of the first rank.

I will forever be grateful for both Hurney and Rivera. They both had the nuts to pull the trigger on Cam. Most on here were either scared to make the move, or they didn't like Cam. I had expected the Panthers to play it safe, but they didn't. You can't do great things unless you make great moves, and at times you have to take a risk.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
