Free Agency starts three weeks from yesterday

Being in the Super Bowl sure does cut into that long wait, huh?

Teams will be able to start negotiating with other team's free agents as of March 7th.

Checking Spotrac, Jared Allen's retirement puts us at about 28 million under the cap, with more quite possibly to come.

This could be one of the most interesting offseasons in a while.

I kind of like the way Dave has approached it. I know his hand has been forced but mid-tier guys with something to prove versus paying a ton for perceived high end talent seems to work pretty well. Like he says, we are NEVER one player away from a SB title.  Big free agent spending, to me, is short sighted and takes the one player away approach.  That's not Dave's philosophy.

Agreed.  We make a deep run this year, and keep the core together, I wouldn't be opposed to a big splash, but generally that has proven to be detrimental long term.

Draft well and pay your guys that earned it....that's the best way to "win" free agency.

i'm hoping Kyle Love gets re-signed here before it starts.

I would think Kyle Love is one of our next priorities and hopefully a fairly straightforward contract, along with Joe Webb.  Those two both seem like no brainers among our potential free agent crop.

CJ's cut coming when?

I think a restructure is more likely, at least we will attempt, He was playing hurt most of the last year even when he came back from injury, so his bad season wasnt completely his fault(Playing hurt was insider info from Igo). He was just real beat up like Cam was the year before, I wouldnt be surprised to see us restructure, by guaranteeing more money, but spreading out his cap hit over 2 years instead one one, we would still have to pay him about $7m if we cut him or not this year, so maybe cut his cap hit down to $8m and give him $6m next year with like 5 guaranteed, and we gain $8m in cap space. I think this is the most likely scenario

I'm curious to see how we approach this offseason considering we are looking to have a bunch of cap space even with Norman getting Tagged.   I think the players that would gardner the most attention from us out of the big names would be Mario Williams and Matt Forte, we just really need a better RB, Stewart is just OK IMO, and he gets hurt too much to be reliable. we gotta get better there. I know people want us to look at OT's but decent OT's dont get moved if they are any good they stay where they are, so I think it's more likely that we address this through the draft.

IF CJ stays, I think it's mostly in a veteran leadership role. Maybe still starting, but we can't and won't expect much production. With Allen for sure gone, I don't really want Ealy (an occasional bonehead) being our veteran DE leader. A pay cut centered restructure is probably the play, unless GMan pulls in a vet DE or two.

CJ could be a possibility for cuts

Stew could be

Frankly, Kalil is a possibility, but think a reach

CJ is a possibility, but I think they work hard to keep him, and reduce his cap hit.  He did have a rough year, but I think he's got more game in him.  He was coming on pretty strong at the end of the season/playoffs/super bowl.  I just don't think he was ever fully healthy during the reg. season.  <----  This could be one of the reasons they might consider cutting him.  He's still got game, but can you trust that he'll stay healthy?

From what's being said, currently, it seems like Stewart is safe for another year.

I don't think Kalil should even be mentioned, as far as cuts go.  He's not getting cut, IMO.  Is he making a lot when you look at his contract?  Yes..., but compare it to the other top centers in the league, and he's pretty much in line.  It just wouldn't make sense.

CJ is anybody's guess really. Wouldn't be surprised to see him cut, or renegotiated with.

Stewart I think will most likely be around for one more season at least.

Kalil? No way he's going anywhere. Center is too important, and we saw firsthand the importance of OL in the Super Bowl.

    • The only thing I said was he was part of the staff that made part of the decisions, and that I am judging the decisions made by that group as a whole. As assistant GM, you can pretty much guarantee his input held more sway than an intern or the guy that takes coffee requests. Fitterer didn't operate in a vacuum. Neither does Morgan now. While Fitterer did have the ultimate decision, to say that Dan had no input in ranking boards, evaluating FAs, trade offers or anything else would be asinine. We all know he did. Otherwise what the hell was his job as assistant GM? He wouldn't have been kept for 3 years if he was arguing every decision Scott ever made.    And the actual quote was "Morgan has done a bang up job in the draft and FA. Compared to what the last guy did, he is kicking ass and taking names." So is XL kicking ass and Brooks taking names from last years draft or did I get it backwards? We took Wallace over Payton Wilson because he was an injury risk after trading up for a RB with a torn ACL? Which one of the kicking ass and taking names was that?  Maybe we should review the thousands of gameday posts calling for XL to get off the field because he's a bust and can't catch a cold. We could review the posts about Brooks but... And Wilson. He's at 118 tackles this season vs 36 for Wallace.  I gave credit to Dan for a good draft this year. But I'm also not ignoring last year's draft either since he did that one after the last guy too.  That's not a strawman.
    • And then, in week 18, we can take Mayfield out of the game and whoop Bridgewater's @$$ for good measure! Let the former QB revenge train roll on!!
    • If we keep our guards in tact ($$$) and go with Mays at C, some OT depth would be nice. I think we should be happy about CB with Thornton's development (pre injury) and Smith Wade. I think Ransom is developing nicely, but I would like to see a FS type for situations. We suck at ILB and Edge (as a whole). We should be OK at RB.  I hope we sign Dowdle to a short contract. QB?  There are signs of hope and development.  (I don't like our backup QB) TE?  Good draft for TE, but I think we are developing with Evans, Sanders, and Tremble. WR?  A #2 with Coker and Horn in the slot.  XL?  What is that? We should be good in 2026. Morgan does more than draft.  Free agency has been strong too.  (Just emptying my brain on your comment--sorry)
