.... NOR will he take a "hometown discount"

Jonathan Jones got a good interview with Norman.  It's worth reading in full.

Debunking the myths

Norman put two ideas to rest in the Friday interview. The first is the specter of a training camp holdout if he and the team don’t reach a long-term agreement by July 15. A holdout, he said, would do nothing for his contract situation or his teammates.

And Norman also debunked any theories about a “hometown discount.” Yes, he’s lived in the Carolinas his entire life, but that doesn’t mean the Panthers can pay him any less than someone who’s not from here.

“If you’re the best at what you do, like the best – it doesn’t matter if you’re a truck driver, salesman, reporter, server – don’t you think you should be paid like you’re the best at something?” Norman said. “Or are you going to take a pay cut and let a lesser person get the same as you? Would you? Even though it’s your hometown and all, I get it. That’s the question you’ve got to ask yourself.

“People wanted me to take the deal that was offered to me last year and thought I was crazy about it. That is your mentality. That is what you think. But for me and mine, I think something much higher.”

Thinking like an all-time great

On an ESPN show Thursday, Norman ranked himself in a tie with Revis for fifth all-time among all cornerbacks. He said Friday he was put on the spot and accidentally left out future Hall of Famer Champ Bailey.

Norman said he doesn’t believe he’s among the greatest of all time yet, but he has to think like he is.

“For me, I’ll be up there one day,” he said. “If I keep working the way I’m going, that’s where I want to be. That’s my whole take on that. Not to say I’m going to put myself up there right now, because I have a lot more work to do. But as far as me wanting to be up there, yeah that’s what we’re working towards. I’m not trying to disrespect anybody by doing that. That’s just my mentality.”

If that's what he wants then I hope he gets it, somewhere other than Carolina. But I DO NOT want to hear one person EVER say anything about it being time for Norman to get a ring etc. etc. You have 2-3 options (depending on good fortunes) for how to build your career/legacy. 1) Chasing $$$ 2). Chasing success. 3). Loyalty. You may get lucky and get 2 of these 3 but you aren't going to get all 3 unless you are the luckiest SOB ever. That being said, When it comes to the end of a guys career, some chased the almighty $$dollar$$ and some either chased rings looking to play for successful franchises or stayed loyal to their squad no matter what. Those last two are the group I feel for and want to see ride off with rings and glory. The guys who chase the goals within the game itself and see themselves as a part of the fabric of the history of the game. The ones who chase money are fun to watch but I feel no sympathy for them if they don't achieve any bucket list items or have bad luck. It's all about them and nothing else matters.

And yes, for the smart @$$ that will always get on and quote money figures, in the shoes of 80-90% of the players in the league, I would factor in my chances of winning and staying loyal to a team i cared for over the amount of money. This generation has been greedy and forgotten what it is like to NOT chase $$ and to focus on a legacy instead. I am not sure if I would chose the loyal route or picking successful franchises route (when possible) but I'd take a steep discount from either to be apart of something special. At the end of the day, if you are a success and smart in this league you'll leave with millions of dollars regardless. My kids and grandkids can hold a championship ring, they can't hold my paycheck. As long as I have a way to make sure they are provided for (and guys like Josh CERTAINLY DO) I'd rather find glory than a few extra $$ that I can't take with me when im dead anyways.

Josh will find out the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Yes money will be great, but it does not bring happiness. Josh is willing to sacrifice happiness for money, even when he was offered a ok contract already. Seeking to be the highest paid puts pressure on future proformance. I see Josh being around for a year or two, but after will be gone like CJ now. I'm hoping for the best for Josh though.

Some of yall sound like you're in your feelings like a female.  Good for josh, he shouldn't be asked to take a hometown discount either.  Go get that money young fella,  I realize that this is gonna be his last year with us and appreciate what he's done.  Now it's time for him to go get paid and quite frankly he should.  If I had to guess, he'd be a jaguar they have the cap room and the most young talent of anyone in the league and would take them over the Raiders in the next 3-4 years. Then they could add ramsey or jack this draft.

I'll be extremely happy for Josh the day he gets his longterm contract, he's someone who is fun to see succeed. Hopefully that contract will come after a successful super bowl run and with a team in the AFC we don't play very often.

It would be foolish for Norman to do anything but promote himself right now.  In any negotiation the more leverage you have the better.

Ifs easy to read an interview like this and get all negative about him signing a long term deal. You're causing yourself unwarranted stress if that's your reaction.

The interview didn't give any real insight into where the negotiations stand, nor should he have.

There is a lot of risk for Norman if he does not sign a deal by the 15th. If he plays out this franchise tag, injury, not quite as great  a year next year, and of course another year older.

Last year the gamble was worth it, since he believe in himself and knew that he could and would play like a top corner in the game. If he signed last year, surely he's be holding out now.

However this year, unless Gettleman completely low balls him, there is not as much to gain by having another good season, as there is as much to lose by not repeating or eclipsing last season.

I get the no hometown discount thing, however that has no relevance right now. He's not a free agent, with teams in a bidding war over his services. He's been tagged and is ours for a least next year.

I get the feeling that if he has another years like this past year while playing under the franchise tag, then Gettleman will pay him. I still think they can work out a deal this year, but if not then he plays under the tag. And if he balls out, and plays the same way, then I personally think that he will get his money in Carolina. If he drops off, then he may stay for lesser money. that is just my gut feeling.
